June is busting out, etc., etc.

In 8th grade I somehow wound up with a scholarship and the chance to attend Manlius Pebble Hill, a very nice private school outside Syracuse, NY. It was a great year – not at all the typical, tortured 8th grade hell most people have to live through. Anyway, our class put on The King and I. (There were maybe 30 people in our class.) My role was Tall Girl Who Stands In The Back and Says Nothing. Wendy and Philip had the lead roles, which meant, of course, that we viewed them as a couple, when nothing could have been further than the truth. Philip used to call Wendy a “Battle Axe”. I was never sure exactly what he meant by that, but it didn’t sound good. Anyway, anyway, the song in today’s subject line is in that musical and I can’t get the thing out of my head.

Another random thought: cigarettes killed Yul Brenner (who was the lead in the original King and I and a very sexy bald guy) and lots of other people. Don’t smoke. Quit.

I am rambling this morning because I had a dream in which I gave birth to a baby boy. I half-woke up and said “That’s silly. I’m not pregnant. Besides, if I just had a baby, my boobs would feel funny.” So I started to fall asleep again. And then my boobs felt funny. I leapt out of bed. Totally freaked me out.

I’m back in PA for a couple days. Mer’s last, last, last band concert is tonight. (More sobbing ahead.) I stopped in Bethlehem on my way south last night and got to see where Stephanie will be living next year. She’ll be the Resident Director on South Campus at Moravian College. She has an apartment in the dorm built in 1865. Her living room looks out onto a tree that was standing when the Constitution was signed. How cool is that?

Deep Throat, the whistleblower who blew open Watergate, has identified himself. This is amazing.

Country roads

It is indeed a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I took the Creature With Fangs for a long walk this morning, tunes courtesy of James Taylor and the Allman Brothers. I think it is time to rename the dog. She has stopped chomping and nipping those she loves best. She is massive… 8 months old and 56 pounds of pure-bred German Shepherd. Taking her for a walk is more like being taken for a drag, at least the first mile is. I think I’ll call her Baby Monster Girl for a while.

So BMG and me was walking. If you know the area (hi Lori!) we walked down Green Rd. from the other side of Hurlbut down to Rt. 64 and back. It is a gorgeous morning here; bright sunshine, high clouds, birds everywhere. We passed a large, scraggly hawk watching over his meadow, waiting for breakfast to come out of its hole. We had minor encounters with two dogs that weren’t leashed in their yards. That was a little scary – one was a pitbull. I’m going to call a vet and find what I should be carrying to discourage these encounters…. not the encounters themselves, but if they turn ugly. But it all worked out.

I’m going to write for a couple hours, then we’re going to the movies. Yes, THAT one. I’ll let you know what I think.

PS – what happened at H-H on Thursday?

Peaceful, easy feeling

Salutations and greetings from Mexico, NY!

The apple blossoms are just fading and lilacs are bursting everywhere. I worked for a while on the end of the troublesome barbeque scene in the new book; still not happy with it. We took a trip to Oswego (nearest big town) and tried to introduce Kezzie, our Creature With Fangs, to Lake Ontario. Kezzie does not like lakes. Bad lake, bad, bad lake. She thought it was trying to attack her, the waves scary. Big, mean lake.

Beloved Husband is about to start a fire outside and cook dinner. The air is cool and the pansies are bright. When the sun sets there will be stars.

Coolest prom story ever

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Proms rock. Everybody needs to dance.
