Flatlined

A moment of silence, please.

Despite BH’s frantic, last-ditch resuscitation efforts, invocations to the gods, and a couple of swift kicks to the tires, The Plow Truck has finally died. Really died this time. Dead. Dead. Dead. If we wanted to replace the engine, and then replace the frame, steering mechanism, brakes, and exhaust, well then maybe it could be dragged out of the icy clutches of the grave. But the time has come to end its suffering.

It lived 26 years, well beyond the expected life for a Chevy quarter-ton. It plowed hundreds of tons of snow each winter, and was home to deer mice and other critters in the summer. It was a brave truck, and true. It gave us its last gasp yesterday, heroically opening up the driveway one last time, before it laid down, shuddered, and closed its eyes for good.

A memorial service will be held Friday night at 8 pm. The family has been deeply affected by this loss, so there will be no public calling hours. Donations can be made to the Oswego County Habitat for Humanity.

    1. I, on the other hand, am equally sure that the truck is just sitting there, taking up space on your property. I hope you manage to find a replacement, since I know you get tons of snow up there each year!

      1. This comment totally cracked me up ^_^

My thoughts on Better Placedom were that the Tooth Fairy might have a cousin, the Truck Fairy, who would know what to do with Laurie’s once-truck (and perhaps leave a some of money in its stead). Wishful thinking i suppose

I think you mean “shuddered”, yes? What a trooper. R.I.P.

Oklahoma City received one inch of snow here yesterday. Very cold for us (6 degrees) and dry. You don’t even need a shovel to clear the sidewalk – A broom does the job. Everybody’s afraid to go out in it, but we’re better off than the relatives in Texas. They had sleet. Cars were abandoned in the streets. I hunger for deep snow and the sound of tires squeaking through snowpack.

Yeah, duh, good spelling mistake catch. I’ll fix it in a minute.

      Brooming away snow – hah!

The sun came out today and turned the world into a jewel box. Took my breath away whenever I looked out the window.

  6. I rented Speak last night and really liked it. The hospital scene seemed kinda off but other than that it was pretty much like how I was picturing it back when I read it.

  14. Wow. That truck has been around as long as my dad has been teaching in the district!
    *bows head in reverence*
It must have done its fair share of snow plowing.

  17. I now leave you with a song by Evanescence, which I find to be semi-appropiate with this.

    Goodnight, sleep tight
    No more tears
    In the morning
    I’ll be here
    And when we say goodnight
    Dry your eyes
    Because we said goodnight
    And not goodbye
    We said goodnight
    And not goodbye

Just remember its spirit goes on.

(Wow, I kind of took way too seriously. oh well)

I’m a huge fan of Evanescence and that’s a pretty good connection. Although it was only a truck… it’s all good 🙂
