Yes, Melinda, the SPEAK movie is tomorrow

The clocking is ticking…. I’m excited, nervous, happy, nervous….I feel like one of my kids has the lead role in a school play.

Some people still haven’t heard the news so here goes: the film version of SPEAK will be shown on both the Lifetime and Showtime channels tomorrow night, Monday, Sept. 5, at 9 pm. Lifetime will be breaking for commercials. Showtime will not.

Where do I begin? I have so much to tell you about this!

First – I love the movie. A lot. The director, Jessica Sharzer, did a fantastic job. She had a budget of one million dollars (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants had a budget of 25 million), one camera, and three weeks to make the movie. We filmed it in Columbus, OH, during a killer heat wave. The air conditioning in the building had to be turned off because the noise messed up the sound recording. A record-breaking thunderstorm opened up holes in the school’s roof – over the room that held all the electrical boxes – and we lost power for a day. I have no idea how Jessica pulled it off, but she did.

The movie is very faithful to the book, but obviously, some things had to be cut. If they had filmed the whole darned book, it would have been a twelve hour movie. Even my rear end would have protested that. I was offered a chance to work on the screenplay, which I turned down because of other writing obligations. The screenplay was co-written by Jessica and Annie Young, the woman who spent several years fighting and struggling to get the book made into a movie. When Annie first approached me about turning the book into the movie, I had my doubts. But she made it happen, a minor miracle as far as I am concerned.

I was on the set for a couple days, with my oldest daughter, Stephanie. It was a very moving, fun experience for both of us. The cast and crew were sweet, though I found that whenever Mr. Neck walked in the room, my stomach started to hurt. Even though he was sweet off camera, his on-camera role was intense – he nailed it.

Everybody nailed it. Melinda, David, Mr. Freeman – they all rock this movie hard. One unknown actress gave a stunning, if brief, performance in her role as The Lunchlady Who Puts Mashed Potatoes on the Plate. Yes, folks, that was me. Watch quickly. I’m on camera for almost a full second. Kristen Stewart, the actress who plays Melinda, had the most difficult job – showing a character’s emotions without speaking much. It is fun to read her opinion of the process in this interview.

I don’t want to go into details about my favorite parts of the movie before you guys have seen it. I’ll try to remember to talk about that on Tuesday.

Several reviewers have already commented on the film. Jonathan Storm is a national TV critic based in Philly, yo, and he sure liked it. Other reviews and interviews are here, here, here, and here (I’m interviewed a little in this one). Showtime has several pages of background material and photos. Oh, and Entertainment Weekly picked the movie as a Must Watch for this week – they gave it a B+

I’ve had notes from readers and teachers who are holding SPEAK movie parties – I know a couple of my kids at college are doing the same. Please send photos of your party I can post here!! Are any of you LJ readers having a party?

What else do you guys want to know?

added later… I’ll give you my menu suggestions for a SPEAK party tomorrow.

  4. I have school starting on Tuesday, so I’ll probably just end up taping it on the VCR. I’ll probably lie in bed from 9 to midnight, not being able to sleep while I know it’s on.

  10. I can’t wait to watch. In fact, reading these reviews of the movie bring tears to my eyes (as does reading the book). You have written, honestly, one of the most touching novels I have come across in my 22 years of life. It has impacted me greatly, has offered insight into my own life (while I was dating my ex-boyfriend he was raped by his best friend; we stayed together despite my immense rage and fear and confusion… and my ex’s own process of coping), and has affirmed some of the most painfully beautiful aspects of humanity that I am aware of. Really, thank you. It is so unique to have the opportunity to share with an author (via LJ) how much his or her work has affected you… and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to now do so. You have done important work. You are, and have been, making such a difference.

    *bows* Thank you.

  13. My sister and her friends went to see Rocky Horror at a playhouse last night! Weird. I would have gone, but I was so tired because I hadn’t slept in 24 hours. I just thought that was a nice coincedence. 😛

  16. I’m really excited! It comes at a great time for me, personally, because I’ve been poring over the book for the first time since I read it when it came out. I’m including it in the critical thesis that I’m writing as part of my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program through Vermont College. I also was looking at your autograph in it yesterday (from the 2000 SCBWI national conference). You wrote: “To Kellye, who makes me laugh. Thank you. Speak up!” I remember you talking about getting your first novel published. And it’s so cool to see all the other successes since then.

    Yay, you!!

  19. It would be impossible to watch this movie and NOT have a party celebrating it. I’ve been anxiously waiting to see this movie for such a long time, and a few friends of mine in college are going to usurp the largest commons room and watch it.

  22. No problem. *hands a wad to Laurie*

You know, in addition to emotional cleansing, another good thing that comment brought me was the inspiration to attack some tough parts of a YA book I am working on. I’ve been struggling with the earlier parts of it, but it came out really well this morning I think. The characters are becoming clearer to me.

So again, you’re inspiring! It’s all so inspiring! And the director of the Speak movie sounds really committed to the project. I really appreciate her.

    🙂 Have a nice day!

  25. I have been wanting to see this film since I heard about it last year.

I loved your book; it was addicting, captivating, and real. Melinda was sarcastic, darkly funny, and high school was captured exactly. I read Catalyst, too, and I didn’t click with it until now, junior year.

Basically, rest assured that I will be glued to my television (and taping it for my friend) tomorrow night. ♥

  28. Speak….. yay!

Speak is without a doubt my favorite book. It’s humorous, powerful, emotional, and moving. I guarantee that I will be watching the movie adaptation when it airs on Monday. Since Speak is my all-time favorite, and to commemorate the showing of the movie on television, I made this little graphic of my favorite quote from the book. Hope you like it. =)

  40. OMG this is the first time Laurie Halse Anderson replied to one of my comments! *cries tears of joy* You really don’t know how much I idolize you =)

But, when the movie gets to DVD, I’ll be able to make lots and lots of graphics featuring Speak.

How many hours till 9 pm tomorrow? 😀

  43. I can’t wait to watch this movie tomorrow night! I’ve been waiting for it since I first found out it was going to be made into a movie! My favortive quote in the book is “Sometimes I think high school is one long, hazing activity and if you’re tough enough to survive this, they’ll let you become an adult. I hope it’s all worth it.” I’ve also read you’re other two books, Catalyst and PROM..I must say that they were amazing, But Speak will always be my favorite. =)

  46. Ahhh, finally!

I don’t know if you remember, but back at NCTE in Baltimore (2001 I think), I had a brief conversation with you about the rights to the book. I love scriptwriting and have worked through many classes in college on the subject when my passion turned toward teaching. Speak was one of the first YA books I read and I absolutely adored it and had so wanted to work on the script. However, you had informed me someone was already on it… Well, lo and behold, I have been awaiting for the premiere EVER since. I have my reinforcements out to record it, as since both my husband and I are teachers, we opt to pay for Internet service over cable. I do have 3 people poised to push the bright red button on their machines. I just wish I could watch it live (all 3 of these people live an hour away) and on a school night, it’s just not workable.

So, in a roundabout way… I am so thrilled to finally be on the brink of viewing the film. Keep me in mind for any other screenplay adaptations…. is Fever, Catalyst or Prom in the works yet?

CATALYST had been optioned, but I think it has expired. I haven’t heard yet if the original production company is going to renew the option.

No movie offers for PROM or FEVER yet, which is a shame, because they would both make amazing movies.

    In my humble opinion.

Let me know what you think of the movie, and what you would have done differently with the screenplay.

BTW, I’ll be at NCTE in Pittsburgh. Will you?

  52. can’t wait!

My sisters and a friend of mine are all having a party. We’re so stoked. We all worship you, Laurie…well, not really, but close. We’re just hoping that it stays close to the book. However, I’m sure if THE author approves, then it must be great. Time goes by so slowing when you’re excited for something. 🙂

  55. !!! It’s Laurie Halse Anderson! Hullo, Laurie Halse Anderson. 🙂

The knowledge that this movie airs tomorrow night makes me fidget in a manner most discomfiting. I adore all your books, but this one holds a special place in my heart, as it must for many other readers.

I suppose I am having a Speak party of sorts, although the attendees will only be myself and my mother. And a bowl of low-fat popcorn.

  58. I personally can’t wait until I get to see the movie. I’ve been waiting for what seems to like an bazillion years…or at least to me. My Mom wants to watch it; but knowing me I’ll tape it on my computer and eat 5 bowls of popcorn. (Which we all know will end up on my hips.)

If I was still in 9th grade I’m sure my teacher would of been dancing for joy because of the movie.

Of course–Speak is my favorite book. It’s probably because I can relate to it and I like the genre that deals with issues that teenagers, as well as adults, face. <3

  61. I admit it.

I read soooooooooo much. I have read Speak about 49 times(no joke) Catalyst about 5 times, and Prom coming to a grand total of 1. I am going to be a freshman next wednsday, and tankfully, none of what happnend to melinda happened to me. Gah. Here I am rambling in front of my idol. Some people want to meet movie stars;I fall for authors. I have only met four though, Christopher Paul Curtis;Grham Salisbary;Chris Crutcher(he is amazing);and some Womens author who’s name I can’t remember for the life of me.

    I *love* you

Some people want to meet movie stars;I fall for authors. I have only met four though, Christopher Paul Curtis;Grham Salisbary;Chris Crutcher(he is amazing);and some Womens author who’s name I can’t remember for the life of me.

    I *love* you

  73. FM alumn

    Hi Laurie~
My name is Mary Antczak. I actually graduated from FM in 88. However I have five brothers who also went through FM.
Two being twins that graduated in 79, (I think! ) Joey and Jimmy Aiello. Ring a bell at all? anyway, I never do this, but I saw “Speak” on Lifetime. I can’t tell you how much I, would enjoy be the right words? As it’s really a tragedy, but it was an amazing . I’m just sorry I didn’t read the book first. I do plan on it. I live in Boston with my husband and daughter whom is 3 and am currently pregnant. Maybe it’s my hormones wanting to write you, I don’t know. I think I’m writing because the story is still inside my head. It’s still with me. Then, I saw on my computer a headline “Speak give’s mute character a voice” so I clicked on it, and was surprised to see that you are an FM alumni, and the story was loosely based at FM. anyway, I hope you don’t think I’m a crazy. I just had to write and tell you it was amazing. And I plan on reading “the Catalyst” which I think I read was coming out this year.

    take care

Yeah, I just emailed Sarah earlier today. We’re not going to be able to wing it… I really could only guarantee half the money and I won’t find out about the grants I applied for until the middle of October=( Big bummer. Maybe next year? I’ll see you in Pittsburgh anyhow!

  82. Kuddos on The Book and Movie

I read the book a few years ago and i loved it. I loved it so much tha I’ve read it about 3 times and have been inspired to read your other books (I just finished Catalyst today and saw your web site and decided to check it out). Fever was well researched and very informative. I loved that as well. I totally freaked when my frined told me that Speak was now a movie. Unfourtunately, I missed the premire, but i did get to see it on Sunday. The actors were really good. seeing the book play out in front of my eyes and seeing what my imgaination painted for me as I read the book was amazing. I trully did love the movie and I’m watching and waiting for new books and movies to bee birthed from your classic ones.
