It’s snowing; fat, lazy lake effect snowflakes. There is nothing more beautiful than Central New York in the winter. Especially when the Beloved Husband has built a roaring fire in the fireplace.
I spent the day talking with 11th graders at Solvay High School. They had done a terrific job exploring the themes and plots of SPEAK, and my visit was the last part of that unit. It was a great set-up in the library – very, very nice librarian and English teachers, too. My voice, which was sounding creaky and monstrous last night, survived nicely. I can feel an upper respiratory infection trying to brew in my lungs (we asthmatics are disgustingly intimate with our breathing apparatus) so I’m back on all the requisite meds. I’ll get a good night’s sleep tonight and that should take care of it.
Not quite sure if my planned visit to Southern Cayuga High School is going to happen tomorrow. It depends on how much snow Lake Ontario decides to cough up.
Chris Crutcher has posted the panel from the Teen Titans comic that contains STAYING FAT FOR SARAH BYRNES and SPEAK in it. Here is the text from Chris’ page “Check out this cool panel from writer Geoff Johns and illustrators Mike McKone and Mario Alquiza, from TEEN TITANS #21, released February 16. Clearly, Green Arrow’s sidekick Speedy (blond) has great taste in books. Cyborg (non-blond) was cool toย stack up her favorite books…”
Thank you, Kelly, for the link!
Also, with a nod to Jenna and Kelly at Solvay HS, here is the Muffanalia link again.

Hey, sorry to bother you I just wanted to say that I love Speak and Catalyst. I used to hate reading, but after reading Speak and Catalyst I started to get more into reading. Both are amazing books. I can’t wait for the Speak movie to come out. I heard Kristen Stewart did a great job playing Melinda.

Thank you for the enormous compliment. If my books turned you on to reading, then I am honored.
Kristen did an amazing job. I wish they would release the movie so everyone could see it!

Hi, I’m another random fan! I’ve only read “Speak,” but I was incredibly impressed with how it was written; you did a wonderful job. Actually, I’m using a few sections from “Speak” as a prose piece for a drama tournament I have coming up, so I’ve been rereading the book because the last time I did was two years ago. Getting reaquainted with it and all. Anywho, I’ve noticed a lot of things that I didn’t before and I’d just like to tell you that it is an amazing book. The character of Melinda is so real and believeable so it makes it easy to identify her. So, uh, Cheers to you and congratulations on getting it turned into a movie (can’t wait to see it!)

Kudos on the Teen Titans nod! I’m going to have to show it to my boyfriend (a big TT fan)….I’ve been trying to get him to read Speak (or any YA lit, for that matter). Maybe Cyborg will inspire him, too ๐

I dont want to sound like all the other fans, but unfortunatly, I think I will anyway. Well I read Speak and Catalyst. Im reading Catalyst for the second time. Not quite sure what it is about that book, but it just brings some kinda of warmness to me right when I open it. My cousin died two years ago today, and no one could cheer me up. So I whipped out Catalyst, and it was like I was in a whole different world. Like I was in the story, in Kates life. My heart shattered when Mikey died, and my jaw hurt from laughing about Kate and Toby’s conversation about the “silicone(sp?) girls” in the magazine. So I just want to say thanks. Your are truly my hero and you inspaire me so much, as a thirteen year old writer, and as just as a thriteen year old. Thanks again.

Re: =)
Thank you very much, Pam. Those are the kinds of notes that make me want to write faster. I really appreciate it.
