Born into slavery in Exeter, NH. After freeing himself, Hall enlisted in the Continental Army and served for the entire war (eight years), including the battles of Bunker Hill, Ticonderoga, Trenton, Hubbarton, Saratoga, and Monmouth. He also served at Valley Forge and on Sullivan’s Expedition.
After the war, three of Hall’s adult sons – who were all born free – were kidnapped from New Hampshire and sold into slavery. One of them, William, was able to escape after ten years and make a life for himself as a ship’s captain in England. The other two were never heard from again.
