I will

This October I’ll be turning 50 years old. I am using this as my excuse for just about anything and everything these days.

One of the things I decided around New Year’s was to give myself permission to exercise as much as I want all year. I adore working out but often allow other commitments to get in the way. Not in 2011!

Here’s what I’ve accomplished so far.

Running 145 miles

Biking 99 miles

Walking 27 miles

Elliptical 21 miles

Swimming 11 miles

Rowing 9 miles

A couple of weeks ago I started lifting weights again, too, and am doing that 3 days a week now.

My blood pressure is low, my resting heart rate has dropped, and the pants that didn’t fit after Christmas fit great again.

Need some inspiration? Here you go.

  1. Wow, I’m super impressed. I haven’t done any physical activity since high school when I was dancing and cheerleading. My cousin and I usually start walking when the weather gets warm, but the weather has been so finicky lately it’s hard to gauge when a good time would be to go walking. I really do need to get in better shape, and eat better. I commend you for your accomplishments so far this year. That’s awesome.

  2. I loved the book “Speak” because of the drama and excited the story had told. I especially liked how the story ended!

  9. Wowza! I love that not only are you completely honoring yourself with uninhibited (and even wanton!) exercise, but you’re keeping such a scrupulous record of it as well! This is so beyond inspiring! You go, Girl!!

  10. I loved your book speak and i really want you to write another sequel to it! I fell in love with the book as well as the movie. You did a great job! 🙂

  11. Keep with it. You will love it. Trust me. It will help you with all your other activites. It will even help you with your writing. This may sound melodramatic but it saved me. It’s made me so much more aware of everything.

  12. What do your lifts usually include? And do you usually run on a treadmill or outside?

  13. Hi Laurie!

first of all, i just finished reading a couple of your books: catalyst, wintergirls and speak (loved them all; they’re amazing!).

your comment about yoga being a struggle caught my eye. i have tried a variety of yoga styles over the years and some complement my body and mind, while i find it nearly impossible to stay with others. i couldn’t help but wonder if maybe trying out other yoga styles than the one you have been struggling with.

for instance, if a slower practice makes you feel restless since you are highly athletic, maybe a style that’s more physically engaging like vinyasa flow or even hot yoga might be a better fit. just a thought…when you find the yoga that’s right for you, it can be a life changer-it certainly has for me.
