Question About Online Presence of YA Authors (for my research project)
Dear Ms. Anderson,
First, I want to apologize if you’ve received this message on a number of different accounts. I wasn’t sure of the best way to get in contact with you!
I am a student at Brown University where I am taking a class called Adolescent Literature. Most of our coursework has focused on how YA literature engages teens, and how the use of YA in the classroom can help to alleviate literacy issues.
For our final project, a friend and I are focusing on how the presence of authors on the Internet affects the reading experiences of young adults. We have identified you as one of the YA authors with the biggest Internet followings.
If you get the chance, I was wondering whether you could tell me a bit about why you maintain a strong Internet presence? For example, what motivated you to interact with your fans online? Are there any particularly challenging or enjoyable aspects of maintaining an online presence? What about author-to-author discussions, such as the use of the hashtag #yalitchat on Twitter?
Also, if you are curious, these are the questions we are asking readers: http://tinyurl.com/y4nlxew (this survey targets the nerdfighter community, as we are also looking at the Internet as a model for a functioning reading community). So far, the majority of respondents have indicated that “knowing” an author online makes them more inclined to read and also makes them more aware about issues like book censorship and the importance of libraries!

I loved the Virtual Author Visit! 😀 I rarely use Second Life, but today I’m glad that I did!
I don’t think the SL url here was quite correct though? I ended up somewhere else, I think somewhere close, but I eventually used the search function to find the right place. Or maybe it was just me, because I’m not a Second Life pro. 😛 (Red sitting balls wouldn’t confuse me anymore, but I don’t know much more than that. ;D)
DARN! I was already IN SL with three other folks from my grad school class and we had to go to educational locations to share information about them. I wish I had known you would be there.
