Cover Girl

File this one under “Things Laurie Never Dreamed Would Happen, Even When She Was Dreaming Absurdly Big.”

I am the June cover girl for School Library Journal.

If you have to be plastered on a magazine cover, this is definitely the classiest and coolest. Thankfully, the only cover image you can find online is sort of small.

The article, however, is huge.

I was interviewed by the all-knowing and insightful K.T. Horning, director of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, AND the 2010 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecturer. She asked extremely good questions and was very patient with my rambling, long-winded answers. Have a peek and tell me what you think.

And those orange sneakers? Stay tuned…. they have Deep Significant Meaning.

  1. That is a great article. Good answers. Since I found you on LJ, I have been reading through all of your books and love them. Just finished Wintergirls in one night.
    Can’t put them down…

  2. love the interview

…love the orange sneakers! You’re pretty much a goddess to me & my house of teens. *channeling inner fangirl* And I love it that you can now add covergirl to your long list of accomplishments…

    🙂 Margie

  3. I LOVE that cover–you look so cool and writerly at the same time (not that those are mutually exclusive, of course!). I’m off to read the article now 🙂

  4. Reading this GREAT interview and seeing those sneakers makes me remember sitting on the bleachers for a school basketball game … where everybody thumps their feet in appreciation of a really good move. thumpathumpathumpathumpathumpathumpathumpathumpathumpathumpa

  5. That’s RAD! Congrats Ms. Anderson! You deserve this and much more recognition for your brilliant work! 😀 Have an awesome day!

P.S. Way to rock the sneakers, I would love to get a pair 🙂

  6. Great interview

Hi, Laurie: Great interview with KT. And I’ve got the same sneakers. . .but in green. They’re 20 years old!

  7. You are a triple threat! Writer, gardener, cover model…

This is the weirdest thing, like, ever. After reading the (fabulous) article, I was going to post a comment about how people feel comfortable writing to you because not only are your books honest, but there’s this trust that you will see readers the way they want to be seen and hear what they are saying to you, and how I remember as a teen often feeling like even if I was being watched or listened to, I wasn’t being seen or heard, not in the way I wanted to be. And then I was thinking that another way to say what readers trust you will do is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, then I thought about “walk[ing] two moons in someone else’s moccasins,” as in Sharon Creech’s WALK TWO MOONS, and no joke, as I was thinking that, I got to the end of your already-posted comments, and lo and behold, Sharon Creech. SYNCHRONICITY.

Maybe that’s not the weirdest thing ever. But anyway, the whole point of my now extraordinarily long-winded comment is that the article is fantastic, and your honesty comes through in everything you do–books, blog, interviews–and I feel like I have a lot to learn from your example. Not as a writer, gardener, or cover model, but just as a person who believes in just being yourself, which I’ve been trying to learn to do since it was first advocated to me by Mr. Rogers. But it’s not always easy. So thank you for setting that example!

  8. Congratulations. You deserve all the recognition. Your books have been hits in my classroom (and for me as an adult reading YA). I have Wintergirls on order from Amazon, and I can’t wait to get it.

  9. Hey, Cover Girl, congratulations! Hope you got a frame picked out.

Great interview, with moving stories. You would’ve been a great nurse, but you’re helping many more people this way.

And yeah, great sneakers. I’ve worn white, black, and green Chuck Taylors through the years, but never something so bold. St. Hubbins would be proud.

  10. Do my eyes deceive me, or are there are words stitched onto your awesome orange Chucks? I can’t wait to hear what this pair “says” and hope you plan on wearing them to ALAN this year so I can see them in person. I do seem to remember a much earlier posting about orange shoes and award receptions, but it is the end of the school year and my mind is weak. I’m looking forward to the story-behind-the-story.

Great article and congrats on the cover!

  11. You have very keen eyes indeed. All will be revealed at ALA, but I will be sure to trot out the Chucks for a second appearance at ALAN.

  12. That is a wonderful article! I have so much respect for you as an author and as a person. I am very excited to read Wintergirls! (I have to wait until August when I’m done school – because I have a feeling that if I pick it up, I’m not going to be able to put it down until I’m finshed reading! I love to take your books, go out on my bike, and find a quiet spot by the river and read them there. I’m looking forward to it!)

    🙂 Sarah
