Yes!

Please watch this – Mayor Jerry Sanders (Republican) of San Diego.

It takes a lot of guts to admit that you have learned something, and grown, and changed your mind. It takes even more guts to stand up for the rights of gay people, especially if you are a conservative politician.

Mayor Jerry Sanders of San Diego gets my hero of the week award. If you agree and you have a minute, please drop him a line and say thank you for being that rare, precious thing: a leader. His email is: JerrySanders@sandiego.gov . If you disagree with him, email him, too. That freedom of expression is what our country is all about.

Thanks to Deb and Aaron for the heads-up about this.

What do you think?

  1. i wanted to comment all three of your last entries, but i didn’t want you to think i was a pest or anything…so i just wanted to say:
    1. congrats on the race!
    2. i love the pictures of the sunrise. i love sunrises and sunsets. i’m grateful to see them. and i love seeing rainbows too. the pictures are beautiful.
    3. thanks for explaining the difference between a writer and an author. you’re definitely the author.
    4. i watched the video you posted and it opened my eyes about everything he talked about.
miss you and good luck with everything right now! =) ♥

  2. Thanks so much for sharing this. It definitely gives me hope in a time when politicians have seemingly lost sight of human rights. I love that while struggling to come to a decision, he listened to his heart.

  3. Mr. Sanders made me proud to be an American, something that hasn’t happened much in the past 6 years or so. I sent him an email on Saturday to thank him for his courage in speech and action.

  4. I think what he did is so emblematic of what the attitude SHOULD be in politics. Not just about the civil rights of it all, but in regards to how the heart has been taken out of everything in favor of blind party lines and sticking to stories that are no longer even remotely based on fact. There’s no sin in admitting that circumstances have changed, and yet politicians seem petrified to change their positions in fear of being labeled as inconsistent. Screw that. I don’t want people in charge to be incapable of admitting when they have a change of heart or screw up. They aren’t effing infallible. THAT’S why so dang many of them end up in scandals a la Idaho and the guy in Florida with the IM solicitation. Is there anyone more sycophantic than a politician? Sander’s gives me hope.

Right. Didn’t mean to turn this into a rant.

I also finally listened to http://tinyurl.com/255h76 yesterday, which is also inspiring on a similar topic.

  5. Bravo!

Laurie, thank you for posting this. It’s wonderful. I had the chance to meet you at Whispering Pines in Rhode Island in February. I’m cheering all the way from the fair state of Massachusetts, where gay marriage is legal and I am happily married to my life partner of 20 years. It’s a beautiful thing!

  6. Thank you for posting this!! I sent him an email and in it I said that in a world where we having things like the Holocaust, September 11th, and the Jena Six, he is a shining ray of hope for understanding and tolerance. And it”s true. One can only hope that we can find more politicians like him. I’m cheering all the way from Tennessee!!!!

  7. Thank you for sharing that. It was absolutely amazing and definitely made me a little sniffly. I’ll certainly be writing a letter to this remarkable man who has clearly realized what being in a position to make a difference is all about.
