Day 5, no – wait, I counted wrong… this is Storm Day 6

When I moved up here, everyone said “Where is Mexico, NY?”

Everyone knows now. CNN knows. CBS knows. And everyone is talking about lake effect. The governor declared an emergency for the county yesterday. Swim sectionals have been postponed another day.

It snowed more overnight and it is snowing now and they think it will snow for at least five more days. But we’re only getting a foot or so a day, instead of five inches an hour. We were able to get out of the driveway this morning and went into town.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic The clock at the bank. Everything in the village was closed yesterday, but open today. The roads are clear, mostly, thank to plowtruck drivers who worked all night.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic I grew up eating maple snow because my parents grew up eating maple snow. Yes, there is probably pollution in the snow. A couple spoonfuls won’t kill me. Here are the two necessary ingredients. (That maple syrup was harvested from the trees I can see from my office window.)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Ummmmmm! My father claims one must alternate bites of maple snow with bites of dill pickle in order to get the sharpest taste contrast imaginable. I refuse to do this.

Even though we’re expecting another week of snow, it should be manageable, now that the initial five feet of it is cleared from the roads. But stay tuned!

  1. Wow – maple snow!! Oswego County snow is definitely cleaner and whiter and prettier than Onondaga County snow. It makes me sad that I have to tell Molly NOT to eat the snow – because I don’t even want to think about what sorts of pollutants are in it. Maybe a visit to points north is in order …

    Keep warm up there!

  2. as i was saying to stef:

“i really want to ask your mom if we can come up and visit…except the whole damn point is that there’s no way to get up there.”

then there was pouting. oh, so much pouting.

  3. Wait a minute. I boil the syrup first. Take it to the candy stage (on a candy thermometer) and drizzle it over a panful of snow. Voila. Maple candy, in all kinds of interesting shapes.

  4. Horray for Laurie getting out of her house!

My neice from Connecuit was so amazed yesterday because we had to clean off the roofs. She said “Thats so dangerous! I’ve never seen anybody do that before! Wow, you guys are brave!” Just another fun part of living up here. I saw a truck today that had a big sign posted on the side of it that said “Roof Shoveling for Hire.” Too bad I didnt see that yesterday!

  5. Oooooh. Your dad is right! I forgot all about the dill pickle. Why won’t you try this?? It’s like eating extra sharp cheddar with apple pie.

  6. Still so very jealous.

I have half a mind to go outside and recreate these pictures with a distinctly Australian tilt. So what what if I don’t have snow and can’t have snow maple syrup? I don’t need snow. So there!

  7. That much snow boggles my mind. I’m looking around, trying to imagine what it would look like here if we had snow like that, and it’s nearly impossible. Everything is white!!
