Samhain

We are getting to a curious time of year for me…. Halloween… can’t go there yet, maybe I’ll talk about it next year.

The allergy/asthma/cold thing is better. Ran a surprisingly fast 5K Goblin Race yesterday. I still cough a lot at night, but that should improve this week.

The past week went up in smoke, between feeling punky, going to doctors, taking my mom to doctors, and other family things. Was I writing? Not as much as I wanted. And yeah, that was me a week ago, giving the speech at the Rutgers One-on-One Conference about how we have to “be writing” blah, blah, blah.

brief interlude I had a blast at Rutgers. Part of it was seeing so many old friends (not nearly enough time to hang out with them), part of it was the kinetic charge I always feel at a writer’s conference, and part of it was meeting one of my heroes: Jim Murphy. I was privileged to work with a wonderful mentee, to be in a fascinating 5 on 5 group, and they let me give a speech at the end, a speech I needed to hear as much as anyone in the room, because weeks like last week make it easy to forget I am supposed to be writing. end of interlude

So the Dark Time of the year begins midnight on Tuesday, aka Twisday, aka Tyrs day. We’ve had a taste of it this morning with whipping winds, and squalls of hail and snow. I love it…. I am much more a Dark than a Light.

What is your costume this year? Why?

  1. I teach fifth-grade English, so I go to school as a literary character. Severus Snape was my best one: black boots, black jeans, black button-down shirt, silver chain belt, black graduation gown, black heavy cloak, black gloves, black tree-branch wand in concealed wand holster, and of course an entire bottle of leave-in conditioner in my hair. (Okay, so maybe I was getting a bit more out of that one than my students were…)

My parents are visiting from overseas right now, so the three of us will be Lucy, Peter, and Susan from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. It’s not going to be particularly elaborate this year, though. Too much else going on.

  2. What is your costume this year? Why?

i will be dressed as The Good Daughter, handing out halloween candy to trick -or-treaters so my dad doesn’t have to keep getting up to open the door.

  3. I was going to be Maude Lebowski, ’cause that movie kicks ass, but I couldn’t find a costume, so I guess I will just get all gothed out for the day.

  4. I’m going as a dinosaur. 🙂 This is because all the flapper costumes were sold out in size small. This is also because I found the costume at Goodwill for $2. I feel like I’m five in it, and I love that feeling.

  5. I’m going as a pirate. Not any specific one, just one I’ve designed. I’ve got everything I need, though unfourtunatly I can’t bring weaponry to school. Which is perfectly fine. I don’t have a picture of me in my costume yet, I’ll have that on tuesday afternoon, if you’d like I can reply here with a photo for you.

  6. I’m actually not dressing up this year, which makes me sad, but usually all my friends and I dressed up and just hung around and ate all the candy that inevitably shows up around Halloween time, but this year I’m far away from them all with nothing to do on Halloween. So no dressing up. I will however be bundled in my room watching Halloween-y movies. Yay 🙂

  7. Gandalf’s Mother.
    Also Arwen’s mother,and Legolas’ mother.
    My generative capacity spans centuries.
Maybe I’ll go as Mitochondrial Eve… hmm.
Regardless, I still haven’t figured out where to get a long blond ponytail for my short, dark, five year old. The rapunzel wigs don’t really suit him.

  8. king of the fairies… because i wanted to be a gypsie, and i had a couple of friends who wanted to be fairies. so were gypsie-fairies. the king, queen and daughter-princess thereof. yeah. because were that cool.

  9. hey

i am going as a nun. ha! well it is all because i am in the musical at school and that is my costume and we have practice on halloween. not in a mood to write had a bad day.

  10. Hallowe’en costume

I’m going to be Melinda Sordino and read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein on Halloween because I’m too old to go trick-or-treating, my parents say grade ten is the cut off year. A few of my friends are still going, one of them is going to be a bear, I don’t know why.

  11. Planned for Anne Bolyen only to discover that my spring cleaning was a little too zealous this past year. No costume. Had to make due with child’s size pirate gear and an eye liner mustache. Lazy Sallie Half Stache, to be precise.

Oh, and I thought you should know that I began Speak with my English I students on Halloween. Felt it was appropriate.
