Finally… my resolutions

The fact that I am twelve days late figuring out what my resolutions are should give the reader some insight into my current state of chaos.

::shakes head with world-weariness and self-loathing::

Here we go:

1. I resolve to make all deadlines in 2006. This includes deadlines for books, articles, publicity requests, timely email and fanmail responses, and returning my library books on time.
2. I resolve to work ten hours a day until I get caught up on everything I am behind on so I can accomplish Resolution #1.
3. I resolve to read more for fun.

That’s enough. I can never remember more than three things at any given time.

The weather has been totally weird here. The temperature has been in the high thirties and forties. I am not amused. I like winter. If I wanted to see mud and grass in January, I would have stayed in Philly. I need a blizzard, something that will snow us in for four or five days. I want to use my snow shoes. And I am sure my family wants me to stop whining about this, so will the joker who moved the jet stream too far to the south please put it back where it belongs? Some people, I swear.

  1. World-weariness, I hear ya.

Reading for fun, good! You need to refill the well or whatever.

I’ve decided to add one to my resolutions, since you, my therapist, my mother and everyone else thinks it would be good for me- exercise.

  4. Happy New Year! It’s been awhile since I’ve commented, but I faithfully read your blog! Good luck on your resolutions! I’ve tricked myself into accomplishing mine by calling them Goals. Somehow “resolutions” have always intimidated me and set me up for failure. Here’s to a productive and successful 2006!

  7. Oooooh, be careful of what you wish for! Living in this area, you and I both know that the warm temps and sunshine are just a tease. I suspect we’ll see at least one or two more major snowstorms before the season is over.

Agreed. There’s this book called Prom I’ve been meaning to get to …

  13. *Applause, re: resolutions*

It’s 60 degrees in Philly today. I propose that we evolve into creatures that fly south for the winter. Far, far south–to live among the penguins. They seem affable enough.

  16. Why does the rhythm get us everytime?

So I’ve recently decided to become an amazing, earth shatteringly kind human being. Not that I’ve been a big ass my whole life, but there’s always room for improvement. I don’t know what’s led to this quasi-epiphany. Possibly the fact that I am maddeningly in love with my best guy friend, who is hands down the most amazing teenager you’ll ever meet. And I’m not just saying that because I like him so much my fingers ache (or maybe because my mother keeps the office bitterly cold to help her plants develop into harsh enviornments. Which speeks volumes about her parenting skills). But it could also potentially be because I’ve taken a large “self-appreciation day”. Not getting my nails done, though they are a bit weathered. I read philosiphy, Slaughter-House Five, Invisible Monsters, and Prom. At first I thought Prom would be something I’d throw in for comedic shtick, some lighter readign. But it held just as much weight as the darkly nihilistic Invisible Monsters or the life-changing buddha chatter.

So thanks for Prom, it was good. Now all I have to do is figure out how to become a better human being.

I think you are already on your way. Thanks for the nice words about Prom – they made my day.

  22. I have a question, do you get motivated to write when it’s cold out or when it’s any other kind of season? Just curious. 🙂 I love the cold and that sometimes motivates me more than other times for some reason.

Here in California the weather has been weird. It goes from being in the mid 60’s to low 70’s with sunshine and perfect weather, and three day’s later it’s absolutely freezing and raining. It’s just crazy. =P

  25. I hear you on the weather. When it’s winter, I want SNOW. Not fifty degree weather. I’ve been spoiled by this East Coast annual snow. Of course the year that snow days don’t matter to me at all is the year that there are none. Though the fog delays every day this week have been kind of nice…

  28. Look at me, double posting ’cause I’m too sleep deprived to remember everything I want to say at once. But I have a question for you. When you first get your characters for a new novel, how do you go about developing them? I know every author does things a different way, but do you completely dissect their personality or let them reveal things to you as you write? Do you find out their favorite food and color and things like that or just the main things? Thanks 🙂

  34. I think about my main character for a couple of months before I start writing. Sometimes I’ll draw up lists of characteristics, but I seeem to do that less than I used to. The character really comes to life on the page. As I figure out the action and dialog of a scene, the character will move and do things in ways that give me keys yo understanding what kind of person s/he is.
