Away for a few days… tell me your resolution

Harold I. Anderson Jr. died this afternoon. It hurts, but he was suffering, and we know that he feels better now. He was born in 1926, fought in WWII, sold coffee and tea and chocolate, and loved his family beyond words. He was a good man and a wonderful grandfather to my daughters. He taught me about gardening and the proper way to eat mashed potatoes and patience. We miss him something awful.

I’m headed to PA to hang with that side of the family for the next few days. I head home to NY and will be back here in LJ land some time after the funeral next week.

A safe and inspired New Year’s to all!!! Here’s the question, of course: What is (are) your resolution(s)??

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ll be thinking of you.

Resolutions: to stop biting my nails (I’ve that one for years…) and to have a better semester than the last one 😀 xo, H

  4. My resolution is the same as it is every year: Read as much as humanly possible. Of course, I’d like to get good grades and meet nice people and get along with my father and keep my room clean; but really, all I want to do is read as much as possible. I aim for over 50 books a year, but I don’t beat myself up if I don’t manage it. If I reach 50, it’s great! If I go over, even better! But I do realise that sometimes, it’s a good idea to interact with Real People, and not a good idea to be reading at the dinner table– just to reach 50 books.

My condolences to you and your family. Your father (in law?) sounds like he was a nice bloke.

  7. I’m sorry… 🙁

Ohh, I’m so sorry that he died! I know it’s hard when loved ones pass on. He sounds like he was a really nice man but I’m sure he’s happy right now.

Hm… my resolution is to keep my room clean, organize myself, and do well on exams. And strive toward my goal to get into the boarding school I want, but I won’t be turning in my application until next year. 🙂

  19. Thoughts and prayers to you and your children. Mr. Anderson sounds like a good man, which is the highest praise I could imagine.

This year, I resolve to finish four novels, two stories, and a poem. The poem will be a bear.

  22. I’m sorry. Death is always rough.

It’ll never happen, but I’d like to be less self-destructive next year, or at least I’d like to actually want to be nicer to myself, instead of just knowing I should take better care of myself.

Instead, I’ll probably start doing volunteer work again, even if the director at the local youth center drives me even more insane than I already am.

  25. I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. My grandfather also just died, and it sounds as though they were very similar, admirable men. I hope the memories will keep him alive for you and your daughters during this time.

  28. I am deeply sorry to hear that. It sounds like he had an incredible life, though. I don’t know if there is a better epitaph than “he loved his family beyond words.” :hugs: He sounds like an incredible person.

One of my New Years resolutions is to read one “classic” a month. I haven’t decided on the others, yet.

  52. I’m incredibly sorry for your loss. 🙁 Just remember to stay strong. Having family around helps as well.

    My resolution:

To try and be a better person.

And…to truely try and figure who I am.

I think that makes sense right?

  55. My condolences regarding Harold’s death… Having just completed your novel Fever 1793 last night for the first time, the death of Mattie’s grandfather is fresh in my mind. I hope you and your family take the time not afforded to Mattie in the context of the fever epidemic, in order accept the process of change with patient grace. From your short description he sounds like a beautiful person…

Here are some of my new year’s resolutions:

1-Meditate every morning, at least 10 minutes (ideally working up to fifteen).
2-Do yoga three mornings a week (ideally working up to five mornings a week).
3-Begin re-writing The Twelve Dancing Princesses so a dear friend of mine can illustrate it; commit mindful time to this project.
    4-Continue working on my novel.
5-Devote adequate attention to my writer’s group (begin to revise short stories as well as submit sections of the novel).
6-Teach yoga to my kids (I teach in the Threes Program at a pre-school).
7-Become a great story reader and music leader as I begin to integrate into Story Time and Music Time at school.

    Happy New Year!

  64. resolutions.

I don’t like resolutions. It means that there is something you have to do- and what if you don’t? You’re just disappointed in yourself. I have my own called ‘new year ideas/hopes’.

First, I hope to suddenly become popular and beautiful… And if that fails, then I hope to at least make a new friend and possibly buy a new makeup that makes me look somewhat more decent.

Second, I hope to convince my parents that I’m the perfect child and be giggly and happy all the time- and since that plan will probably fail- I hope to at least show them that I’m not altogether heartless.

Third, I would like to find out that I’m really a rich princess that was accidentally adopted into this family- and now my real family has tracked me down and would like to take me back to my castle somewhere in Western Europe.

Since none of my hopes are very attainable, I just want to make it to 17 without any major complications.

P.S. I’ve just reserved a copy of Speak, which I will pick up and begin tomorrow after a miserable day of back to school lectures- and a hundred scary teachers asking their classes what they did on their “Long” breaks. I can’t wait for summer..

  70. Condolences

    I’m sorry.
My grandpa has survived 2 heart attacks and esophagus cancer and many dicey operations. I hope that after all that I have learned to really appreciate his presence in my life.
It sounds like you definately have for Mr. Anderson and I’m sure he knew that.
    My condolences,
    Anna

***No New Year’s resolution yet — although it will probably end up as me trying not to fight with my parents and older sister as much. We’ll see how long that lasts… 😉

  73. fathers/grandfathers

My thoughts will be with you, all the more so because I am in England visiting my 85 year old father and making sure that he gets to spend time with my son (aged 10) who adores him. Your father in law sounds a very special man.

  76. resolutions…

I read Speak in Two days. I couldn’t put it down. The book was amazing, and I really respect your abilities as an author. You hit on seriously key points. Thanks again.
