Just a few more pages…

Almost to the end of the Work in Progress. Still don’t know the outcome of the final confrontation. Can’t wait to see what happens.

We leave before the sun rises tomorrow for a road trip to PA to visit Mer and Stef. I’ll have a finished book and a road trip with my BH. It don’t get no better than that.

Happy birthday today to my little sister Lisa. If you live in Oswego, stop by Rudy’s and say something nice to her. She looks like me, only blonder and skinnier. Happy birthday on Sunday to daughter Meredith. (I can’t believe my baby is 18. How did that happen? Who gave her permission to grow up and become all independant and interesting and fun like that? I want to talk to whoever is in charge of these things!!)

See y’all Monday!

  1. Hello, Mrs. Anderson.

I’m a young writer and I absolutely admire your novels. You’re such an interesting lady and you seem like a very intelligent woman. I hope to be like you when I become an adult. Well, I almost am, but not quite. I’m getting there soon!

I also like your books because they’re usually set in the good ‘ol Eastern US. I live in Upstate New York and right by the border of Pennsylvania, where a lot of your stories take place. Though, I was born in California. Quite a difference, eh? I have been to Syracuse, NY a few times, the setting of the famous Speak and Catalyst. Have you ever been to the State Fair? It’s huge. o_O

Anyway, I checked out your newest book, Prom from my school library a few months ago and loved it. It was very funny and original. I also applause you for being brave enough to poke out at racial diversities and relationships between black, white, and oriental youths and all. A lot of non-black writers seem to be afraid to do that. Great job. :3)

It was nice leaving you a comment! Love your website, too.

    Yours,
    Brandi

  4. I love that time when you’re writing and have no idea what’s going to happen next. Okay, usually I love it; sometimes it’s just a pain because *I’m* supposed to be the omniscient writer, not the characters!

Darn…how I wish I was back home. Maybe the parents could give her a surprise. 😉

    Happy Birthday Meredith!
The only answer I could provide would be to quote Groucho Marx:
“Time flies like the wind. Fruit flies like bananas.”

  10. Work in progress

    Hi Laurie,
It’s very interesting to me that you are just discoving how the final confrontation ends up. I’m writing my first YA novel and I’m struggling with the ending. The characters have developed in unexpected ways, and the original ending that I’d envisioned just doesn’t ring true. I thought this was the result of bad planning – but maybe it happens to lots of writers? Anyway, thanks for sharing these nuggets of your writing process with us! I have to tell you that Catalyst is my model of a perfectly crafted book. (I love the rest of your books, too, but I find the voice in Catalyst to be just incredibly powerful.)
Good luck with your WIP – can’t wait to read it!
    Best wishes,
    Marianna

Did Lisa used to work at Fulton and OswegoDailyNews.com and the Palladium Times as a website designer? If so, I worked with her! She is a lot of fun!

  19. Re: Work in progress

I think it happens to just about everyone who writes, so hang in there and turn over the reins to your characters. They know the story of their lives better than the author does.

Thanks for the kind words about Catalyst!

  25. question

I’m sorry that this is anonymous but I do not have a LiveJournal username. I’m writing to ask your permission for something. I recently finished a novel and am trying to get it published. In my book I alluded to Speak, because my main character lives through fiction and is constantly comparing books to real life. She compares Melinda in Speak to a character in my book. I would cite you, the book and any other necessary information of course. I’ll send you the passage in my book that alludes to yours if you give me your e-mail address or another place where only you can see it. I don’t want to post it publicly. My e-mail is Chaluta2@aol.com. I would really appreciate a reply. Thank-you very much.
    Sincerely, Tracie
