Speechifying

Yesterday’s schedule worked out exactly as planned. I was a writing machine – on fire. It was awesome, if I do say so myself.

I get to do a little of that today, but there are a few other things that require my attention. I already went to the gym (I can now run for 14 minutes with just a little bit of moaning and whining). Most of the day will be book writing, but in the mid-afternoon I have to change out of my pajamas and into grown-up clothes and head south into the Big City, Syracuse, NY. If you want to hear me rant about censorship then here are the details:

Where: Curtin Auditorium, Onondaga Public Library, 447 South Salina St., Syracuse, NY
What: reception, book signing, and my speech: “Censorship: Child of Fear and Father of Ignorance”
When: Tonight, 5:30-7:30 (my speech starts around 6)
Why: because it is Banned Books Week

The Onondaga Public Library system has cool events all week long.

Oh, and if you do come tonight and you read about it here on my LJ, please introduce yourself!

  1. Oh, I wish I could go, but I’m probably going to have to work late tonight. If there’s one thing I love, it’s intelligent rants against censorship. If I manage to get out early, I’ll try to stop by–the central library is practically on my way home. Thank you for the heads-up!

  4. Hi, this is mostly unrelated to your entry, but I managed to rent “Speak” last night, as I missed it when it aired on TV. Loved it to pieces, and now I want to reread the book. I will have to look for your brief appearance before I return the DVD. 🙂

  13. Adolescent Lit. Class: Speak, page 17

    Laurie,

I’m in an Adolescent Lit. Class at Tennessee State University. We were working on a thematic statement for “Speak” and I suggested the idea of institutional absurdity. I pointed out page 17 and asked the professor whether this is a literary allusion to “Catch-22.” (My daughter and I read “Catch 22” over the summer.) He said, “I dunno. Call the author.” So, rather than call, I thought I’d write.

So, if you have time: Is the scene on page 17 of “Speak” a literary allusion to “Catch-22” that suggests the absurdity of the institution from Melinda’s perspective?

  16. Hi Laurie. I just wanted to say that I’m a young author and reading Speak a few years ago basically changed my life. The book is absolutely brilliant, and I completely commend you for your excellent writing. I loved Catalyst as well, but the entire plot and characters of Speak were so real. Thank you for writing. I am so excited to actually write to you. -H
