which life is mine?

Had one of those dreams last night that was so intense I was shocked to wake up this morning and find out, that in the waking world, I was a completely different person.

I wonder if there is something that goes on in the brain when I am working hard on a novel that leaves the door open to these kinds of dreams. It’s like the blast furnace of my imagination is cranked up to full roar and I can’t get it to calm down, even when I’m asleep.

This week is already disappearing between my fingers. We leave Friday to take Mer to college. The older girls are already at their schools. They both work with Residence Life, and therefore are bracing themselves for nervous parents and anxious freshman moving in this weekend.

Is anybody reading this going to the New York State Fair next week? I will be there the morning of Wednesday, August 31st, to tape a short segment for a morning television show, Bridge Street, that airs in Syracuse. The focus of the segment will be the upcoming film version of SPEAK. If you are at the fair when we tape, I think you can be in the studio audience. If you care. And if anyone can drag you out of bed that early the week before school starts…

Back to work!

  1. I’ll be at the Fair, not sure exactly when, but I will be going… if I’m going to be there on that Wednesday, I’ll be sure to make it to the taping. 🙂

And College… my brother’s going back to RIT this coming monday, I’m so sad. I’m going to miss him so much.

  4. Ha! I wish I could go, but my parents won’t exactly want to go to New York for a state fair…oh well. I get a big scoop here, anyway.

They grow up so fast, eh?

  7. I wish I still lived in NY so I could go to the State Fair. I’d only been a couple times but it was always fun. And this year Tyler Hilton is performing, opening for Hilary Duff, and he’s incredible so I’d have loved to go. Unfortunately he never seems to play any gigs where I live now, even though he’s been here to film One Tree Hill.

Have fun at the fair! Make sure you eat something deep fried that sounds really gross but isn’t. Down here they do deep fried Oreos.

  10. Just reading the phrase “deep fried Oreos” makes me want to eat celery and grapefruit for a week.

My favorite Fair food is salt potatoes (a regional specialty) swimming in butter.

How sad is it that the fairgrounds is like the closest thing to my house besides stuff like pizza places and Wal-mart and I don’t like the fair? I mean, I don’t harbor a personal grudge against the thing, but I’m not one of those people who goes every day. I never ride the rides because my parents don’t consider them trustworthy (and I agree) so we always go to Seabreeze or Darien Lake around fair time to ride stuff. I haven’t gone to a show since Aaron Carter when I was in 5th grade or something like that, because there’s never been something I wanted to see. All that leaves is an afternoon or something of looking at the butter sculpture and the animals, eating a lot, and seeing how many free pencils and the like you can collect. It’s fun for a little while, but I never get that worked up for it. Now I actually have a legitimate reason to want to go to the fair (you), but I don’t know if I’ll be home then or if I could get someone to bring me. At least I can watch it on TV.

PS I want some salt potatoes now. I love them so much!

  19. just finished the book Speak

I heard about the book Speak from my friend’s mother. I didn’t think i would actually read it but after the first page i was hooked. I finished it in 3 days. That’s a record for the summer. I have to say it is one of my favorites now. I am going to pick up Catalyst hopefully before summer ends. I hope it’s a good one as well!

  22. We haven’t been to the fair in a couple of years; haven’t really been interested enough to go.
Do you know when your segment on Bridge Street is going to air?

(I move into RIT on Sunday! The parents aren’t going to know what to do with an empty nest.)

  25. Yeah, deep fried Oreos are one of the things I’m curious about and want to try just to see how it tastes, but think I’d probably get sick from. So no deep fried Oreos for me yet!

I love salt potatoes though. I had them last time I went to the NYS Fair. Since moving to NC my parents and I have had to improvise. We get the really small red potatos and a canister of salt and use that. Not all of the canister, but enough. They’re close.

Two other foods we miss from NY: Apple Cider and Cheese Curd. We haven’t found decent Cheese Curd down here, but when we were discussing it the other day we could easily think of about 8 places in NY that sold good curd within an hours drive of our old house in Watertown. Last year we had family ship Burrville Cider Mill’s apple cider down to us. I miss going there in the fall so much, it always was beautiful and smelled really good, and with a glass of cider and a cinnamon sugar cider donut it was like fall had officially begun. We did find cider down here at the Sam’s Club that’s made in NY and shipped, so it’s close, but not quite the same as going and getting it right from the mill.

Reading your journal sometimes makes me real homesick, but then something fabulous happens down here and it’s not so bad. But sometimes all I can think of is driving up along the St. Lawrence River and going to the drive-in at Alexandria Bay. Or just driving all those back roads highways I used to. The fall foliage, the smell of the air on a summer night(which sometimes I get here, depending on the tide and where in the town I am). I miss the two flea markets in Pulaski and Syracuse. I miss being able to drive an hour and be in Syracuse where I could see a show, do some shopping, and have a great dinner at someplace like Spaghetti Warehouse or the Plainville Turkey Farm Restraunt and then be back in a small town in another hour. It’s the simple things I seem to miss the most, but they’re not simple because they’re so unique to that area.

    Okay, enough of my rambling!

  28. The best place I know for cheese curd is the Colosse Cheese Factory…. it looks like they are taking online orders now.

I understand your homesickness for this area. Having been “away” for 24 years, let me tell you – it is good to come back.

  31. RIT… gasp. You must be so stoked!!!

I think the Bridge St. thing will be live on Wednesday morning. You, of course, will be sitting in class by then.

On empty nests…. they are harder to deal with than I expected. But there are benefits too. And the nice thing about kids is that they generally fly home on a regular basis.

    Have fun!!!
