Can you smell it?

Don’t know about where you live, but up here it’s beginning to smell a little like fall, especially first thing in the morning with the fog laying loose on the cornfields. I’ve never gotten over the sense that the New Year really begins after Labor Day, not January. My stomach gets jumpy at the thought of another school year, even though I haven’t had to show up for class in a long, long time.

The trees will start turning soon.

More work on my WIP today. I barely recognize it from the little idea which originally hatched. I keep having dreams in which I am told to act fearlessly in very scary situations. Well, duh, I figured out that one.

Sandie, a cool YA librarian from Philly writes: One of my librarians just asked me if you are working on a sequel to Fever. Can’t wait to watch Speak – are there any posters?

I want to do a FEVER sequel someday, but it’s not on the table yet. Showtime is doing a lot of SPEAK publicity (commercial alert – movie premieres September 5th, 9 pm, on Showtime and Lifetime) but I haven’t seen any posters. They do have a trailer for the movie up.

Sarah writes: I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed Prom, as well as your other YA books. My friends and I are ‘normal kids’ so it’s nice to read about kids who are more like us. I was wondering what Ashley’s charges were in Prom when she got arrested. I couldn’t find an explanation (it’s still an awesome book, though).

Thank you. Nervous, petrified authors like hearing that people liked their latest book when they are trying to write a new one. The jerk vice-principal in Ashley’s school had her arrested for trespassing because she wasn’t supposed to be at the prom. Basically, the judge laughed at the charges and sent everybody home. One of my favorite reviews for the book ran in the Philadelphia Inquirer. In the the reviewer said that PROM was not a happily ever after story, but a “happier than before” story. I liked that a lot.

Question of the day – what do you think of the movie trailer?

  1. Nice! I just watched the trailer. I don’t have cable so I have already gotten a friend to promise to tape it for me when it does come out. I’ve also been telling people at my job (barnes and noble) when I see them purchasing one of your books in the teen section, that the movie is going to be on Lifetime/Showtime…not to replace the reading of the book I always tell them, but just to see what the visual depiction is like. I can’t wait!

Yeah…I walked out of a library yesterday and saw a yellow leaf laying on the ground. Felt like I had just found my first grey hair again.

The trailer looks GREAT! I didn’t realize Steve Zahn was the art teacher!! I adore him!!! I don’t have cable and will be on a ferry returning from Alaska that day. Any idea when the DVD comes out? I’ll make sure my system buys lots!

  7. Ohh the trailer was great, it gave me goosebumps. I can’t wait to watch the movie.

And I completly agree with you about fall coming. I woke up cold this morning and my first thought was “summer is coming to an end.” That makes me happy. No more 90 degree days, no more over use of the fan and best of all…it means my birthday is soon!

  10. Honestly- I don’t think the trailer does the book justice.

I’m Crystal. You’ve been on my flist for awhile- but I guess I never commented until now because I had no idea what to say. But you’re book Speak- it changed my life. There was a time when I’d keep it under my pillow when I slept and dragged it to school everyday. I have pages that really struck something in me marked. I was going through a difficult time then- similar to what happened to Melinda, and you’re book gave me some twisted hope to cling onto. I’m not sure how to say thank you.

  13. DVD is supposed to come out Sept.29th. I love Steve Zahn too. He gives me the goosebumps in this role.

I will think about the phrase “on a ferry returning from Alaska” all day.

  16. You just did, Crystal. Wow. Thank YOU! I always get tongue-tied in these situations. Mostly I need to give you all the credit for having the guts to struggle through a dark time. I hope you have more light now.

I hope you comment lots more. I anticipate a lively debate here after the movie is shown.

  19. I’ll make a note to tell the library I work at to buy the DVD too. (:

I do have more light now, but I can’t claim all the credit. Even if Melinda was fictional- her feelings were real to me because I felt them too, and I wasn’t as alone. So, god, thank you for making it easier. (:

I don’t have Showtime but trust me, I will find a way to see it. d:

I thought the trailer looked promising. Hopefully the movie will interest some YAs to read the book. You can pre-order the DVD on Amazon.com now, I did.

  28. I don’t know how I feel about the trailer. I think I’ll have to see the whole movie before I make any judgements. I love the book and can’t really imagine it on screen since my brain does all the movie making on its own when I read it. The trailer looks good though.

  31. The movie trailer and clips for Speak are amazing! Can’t wait for the movie! I was re-reading Speak last night and one paragraph caught my eye that didn’t before, “Sometimes I think that high school is one long hazing activity and if your tough enough to survive this, they’ll let you become an adult. I hope it’s worth it.” It’s so true! The book is amazing and I can really relate to Melinda. Thank you Laurie for writing such a powerful book that not only brings you to tears but changes your life.

  34. The movie trailor was good, Though I don’t posess an elaborated opinion about it, since I want to wait to see the movie, and it comes out not too long after my birthday, so I can think of it as…A belated birthday present!
I do hope they do your book justice since it’s an amazing book, I’ve read it twice, outside of the once required for class. I simply enjoyed the book. It surprises me on how well I could read it and it still cause a few tears, since I have gone though something similar, though, not exactly the same. Your books are amazing, please keep them coming, I’d never really think I’d get the chance to litterally meet the author.
But, for some odd reason, the book Speak gave me this hope to persue my dreams of figure-skating. How they releate I’m not quite sure of it yet, but, just your books are AMAZING.

  37. I haven’t gotten to see it yet to working too much haha. But I hope to! I can’t wait. I absoloutly love, love, love the book and am very forward to the movie. 🙂 I’ve love-read that book too much.

So much that I had to tape the bind because it was falling apart. haha

  40. Trailer

I don’t know what I thought of the trailer, because my computer is too slow to play it. But I do know that they have a list of posters at IMDB. If you go to that page, there’s a poster for it at the top. Then you look on the left column and you can see that there are all these different categories. There should be one that says movie posters or something.

  43. The trailer is incredibly intreguing. I remember reading (and, of course, loving) Speak a few years ago, and the movie looks like it’ll do the book justice.
Except, it’s really weird seeing Steve Zahn as the art teacher. He’ll always be the weird, nerdy (and for a few minutes…naked) guy from Joy Ride.

  46. Like I said before, overall the movie trailer isn’t bad. However, the only gripe of it is that it made Speak kind of happier then it really is.

At least that’s how I see it.

Lookin’ good! It sounds just like I’d imagine it. Mr. Freeman in particular sounds just how I imagined, and it just seems like it’ll really capture the essence of the book. Which is a good thing. I hate it when movies are totally messed up. 😀
