Star Wars?

In July, 1977, I was sitting in the front row at a movie theater (with a date who shall remain nameless) in the old Fayetteville Mall multiplex in Fayetteville, NY. I was 15. As we settled in with our popcorn, I was a little nervous about my date. He had roving octopus hands. A nice guy, fun to go out with, but when it got dark, you needed a Taser to keep him in line.

Then it happened…. ten magical words that scrolled up the screen: “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

He didn’t touch me once. We sat mesmerized by the entire movie, and walked out like every one else in the theater – stunned – at what we had just witnessed.

If you are younger than 35, it’s hard to understand the impact that the original Star Wars had on us. Until that point, movies meant “Herbie and Love Bug”, or “The Sting”. There had never been anything that came close to the special effects, or solid story telling (the pacing of that original is flawless IMHO). If the movie kept Mr. Octopus Hands in check, you know it was good.

Which brings me to today’s question: should I see the new one? I have heard vastly different opinions. Some people say it is horrible, poorly written, and a waste of time. Others claim to have had religious experiences of joy and ecstasy. And the third group says, it’s good enough for $8.

Have any of you guys seen it? What do you think?

PS – Mr. Octopus Hands did not last long with me. I threw him back in the ocean.

  1. My brother has seen all of the Star Wars movies. He says that they’re all good… Personally I loved the original three… I thought they were excellent and The Phantom Menace was a big disappointment… However, I saw Attack of the Clones last night and it was even worse then the first one… So according to my brother it’s worth seeing and I think I’m going to wait till it comes out on DVD but it’s your choice…

Personally I think they should have just stuck with the original three…

  4. Have you seen episodes I and II and what did you think about them? I wasn’t impressed, so I’m going to wait for DVD for episode III, I think. Unless everyone says I MUST see this one in the theater! I, too, was mesmerized and captivated by the first three Star Wars movies (which are really the last three, but whatever –) in the 70s. Saw The Empire Strikes Back over 17 times in one summer. *sigh*

  7. Saw the movie yesterday. I urge you (and Debbi, you too) to see it on the big screen. It is much better than ep. 1 & 2 – even though it still has its clunky parts. It isn’t a masterpiece but well worth the $8.00 and if you wait for the DVD, well then, something will have been missed. Go.

  10. Big Screen Better

I’m a purist – I like the first three films best – and yes, I am over 35! Having said that, I went to see Revenge of the Sith on Friday, and I would recommend the movie theatre over waiting for the dvd. It’s flawed: dialogue is clunky, Hayden Christenson has not learned to act, as some kind critics stated. What saves it and makes it a must see are the special effects, the poignancy of the storyline, and performances from Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine). The opening sequence of a space dog fight just soars on the big screen, and what ever else we may criticize Lucas for, he has a breadth of vision which makes his films visually wonderful.

  13. I’m sure there are others who have seen it more than that. 😉 Bob was scared and impressed that I still remembered lines when we watched it a couple of weeks ago. LOL

  16. While I was too young to have seen the original first Star Wars at the cinema, I still know where the magic of the time came from, and I’d say that despite the jadedness of modern times, the shiny new Episode 3 is well worth it. it has a lot of the charm that made Star Wars Original the great cult-inspiring phenomenon it still is. Ep 3 has cheesy dialogue, witty robot slapstick, more gun fights than you can shake a lightsaber at, good versus evil and stunning cinematography.
Unfortunately, it has a lame ending and a hopeless female lead, but we’ll make allowances for the new millennium, mehtinks.

No matter what, you *have* to see it. It’s Star Wars. You don’t get a choice.

  19. I’ve heard mixed opinions too. Driving to school today I was listing to Preston and Steve(hooray, they’re back!).. and they came to the conclusion, that eventhough some people said it sucked.. you still have to see it just because it is like putting the last peice of the puzzle together.

    T-minus 1 hour till I’m “done”

Oh, I finshed everything last period.

  22. We saw it at the drive in this weekend. I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, so my opinion doesn’t matter so much. I kept falling asleep in the back of the mini van with my kids, but the parts I did see were good. My husband, who is a big Star Wars fan, liked the movie, but agreed with me on this: it was hard to get into the movie when you already knew how it ended.

  25. Being only 20, im not interested in Star Wars. Maybe if I grew up when it first came out I would be a huge fan, maybe not. I have a co-worker who saw it on fri. and said it was really good. Shes in her 30’s.

I wonder if this Star Wars would captivate Mr. Octopus Hands like the first one did. 😉

  28. We went and saw it yesterday, and I enjoyed it well enough. Much better than the last two, for sure. Dialog was clunky, and some of the acting was lacking…but Ewan McGregor was fabulous…you could imagine him turning into the Obe Wan of the originial movie. That was the best thing about this film…seeing all the pieces falling into place for the first movie to begin. I think it is worth it just for that. (Just don’t expect any women to do anything inspiring.)

  31. I am a little obsessive with Star Wars, but I still liked I and II, even though many diehard fans didn’t. However, even I could tell how much better Revenge of the Sith was. I went at midnight to see it and it was awesome. I highly recommend it.

  34. I seen it–just yesterday–but…

…that ain’t the point. Like you, my viewing of the ‘first’ movie in ’77 is etched indelibly in what little gray matter I have left. So here’s the thing: How can anyone else’s thoughts/opinions decide this for you?

You gotta make up your own mind about it, which you can’t do without seeing it. So go see it. –LS, who in the same vein hates when people make comments about a book they haven’t read…

  37. And Butch Cassidy!

So I was delighted to hear the following:

Jay Leno (on The Tonight Show a couple weeks back): So, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Paul Newman (nonchalant, almost mumbling): I’m working on something with Redford.

    That’s it. That’s all he said. I can’t wait! 🙂 –LS.

Ooh, I can’t either. Cool. Redford and Newman have such chemistry.

*Love* Butch Cassidy. That’s the first grown-up movie I saw and appreciated as a kid.

  49. Re: I seen it–just yesterday–but…

Here’s the deal – I don’t see many movies. Maybe 2 a year. Time, money, etc.

So if I’m going to take the plunge, I really want to enjoy the ride. What puzzled me about this one was that I got vastly different opinions from people I trust, so I’d thought I’d cast my net wider and pick a few more brains.

  52. Two movies a year??

Now there’s a question for you. If you could recommend just *two* movies for someone to see in a whole year, what would they be? Um, um, “Cinema Paradiso” would be one for sure, and um, um, I gotta think for a while before I figure out what my second one would be…

And OK, in that case, my own brain-pickings re the new SW (warning: as previously mentioned, not many brain cells left to pick…): Nothing like ’77’s experience, but I’m glad I saw it. Or else I’d be wondering forever, and no, the DVD wouldn’t be the same unless you happen to have one of those southern-California-mansion-type screening rooms and even then… The big screen is for me part of the deal. Especially with this kind of movie. And I also love the whole communal-but-separate feeling that you get in a cinema. (I always look around at the audience at least once or twice…)

(If you picked up that this is a rather tepid endorsement of the movie itself, my intent has been served.)

But I’m still impressed by the two-movies-a-year thing. Me, I go to the movies 3-4 times a month on average. For a couple of reasons: It’s something that my (teenage) kids will do with me (as long as I’m paying, of course), and it’s a way for my husband and I (twenty-plus years married) to pretend–for a couple hours a week–that we’re courting again. (We once whiled away an afternoon by figuring out that we saw 68 movies during our first year as a couple!)

  67. STAR WARS — Did you see it?

So, did you see “Star Wars” yet? I’m barely under 35 and so is my husband but I do understand…. My husband is obsessed. He was at the midnight show. Then he slept for three hours, went to work (school teacher), then went again that afternoon. And he’s a totally normal, sane and fun guy. He doesn’t live in his parents’ basement or anything. He’s taking me this weekend. I don’t know how I’ve held him off this long. He’s seen it only twice. 🙂 I’m not looking forward to seeing Hayden Christensen (Anakin) turn evil b/c he’s such a cutie! He shouldn’t be allowed to turn evil.
Anyway, Laurie, you rock!! (Remember me from Lake Orion, Michigan–the middle school teacher obsessed with Speak? I took 50 of my kids to see you in Rochester. You’ve read my drafts… Anyway.) This journal of yours is way amazing. Keep it up. I’m letting my students know about it!

Wow, how weird that I stumbled across this post. I’m a student at Lake Orion High, and I think you were my English teacher in eighth grade.

OMG I can’t believe you’re using that photo! My hair is much, much longer now!

I think we’re seeing the movie this weekend. How is your book doing?

  76. Star Wars and your writing

I love the original 3 Star Wars movies. I didn’t care for episodes 1 and 2 but I think that 3 is something you should see on the big screen. The writing and acting could have been better but at least it ties everything together and you see how that cute little kid became Darth Vader (even if the transition was fast). Laurie I love your writing….I’ve taught the novel Speak twice and I talked my school into buying a class set of Catalyst. I would love for you to visit my school at some point. I teach in Queens. My e-mail is Tmanor1@aol.com

Two simple reasons I’m using that photo: 1) I knew it’d catch your eye and you’d respond. 2) I didn’t have any other pictures of myself when I set up the account. I have 4 trillion of my kids, only one of me. What kind of person has a bunch of photos of themselves anyway? By the way, my hair’s a lot longer too. Growing so slowly though. I wish I could grow my hair as fast as I can gain weight.
My WIP isn’t really in progress right now. Sure I think about it a lot and leave myself notes around the house about it, and bounce ideas off of my students but as far as actually writing, well, not much. I have promised myself that when the brain freeze of teaching middle school thaws (when school gets out for the summer), I will begin anew and seriously. Tomorrow is the last day. Wish me luck.

Good luck! And give yourself at least a week to sleep and catch your breath.
