Day 5 – Los Angeles, pt.1

Real quick – here was my morning at Santa Monica High School.

Image hosted by TinyPic.com This is Tony and Madison. That is Madison’s hat on Tony’s head. The hat came from Prague. I bet the hat has stories to tell.

Thank you librarians Anne and Dana and bookseller Sharon. And note to the English teachers – first, thanks so much for taking the time to share my books with your students. I appreciate that a lot. Second, I’m totally bummed I can’t take you up on your kind invitation. Can I get a rain check?

  1. Madison

the girl with the hat’s name is Madison, not Monica, and she’s one of my best friends. I went to Prague with her and the rest of our school’s orchestra, and believe me, we all have stories to tell (especially the hat). Thank you so much for coming to our school. I am writing an article about your visit for our school’s newspaper. You can e-mail me if you want a copy when we publish, or just get one from Ava, our dear editor-in-cheese.
any comments about the event for the paper?

  4. The Santa Monica School

I don’t know if you heard, but my school wanted you to come and talk to the whole school! But as the school play is going on they couldn’t fit you in, how evil of them!
Glad you had a good time at Santa Monica though!

  7. I was there, it was subpar at best, no offence. You should act your age, i know youre trying to think youre one of us and that we can relate to you, but it comes off as corny and fake. Other than that, i enjoy your books and i think you’re a very tallented author, i just had that one complaint.

  10. Re: Madison

Thank you! I knew I should have written her name down. Arg.

Comments about the event…hmmm… I had fun. The people at your school were a very nice audience, even those who thought I sucked (see the comment from michaeldammer below). I hope you guys got something out of it, too.

  13. I’m one of the kids from Samohi and I just want to say thank you for coming to my school and for giving me that brief bit of advice on writing. I write poetry sometimes but I have yet to get past the first chapter of a story and hopefully with your advice I will be able to. I would also like to say I read your book Speak and I thought it was great. You seem like a very cool person and my friends agree. So anyway, thank you for coming to my school.

Not so sure about the influences… if pressed, I’d say James Joyce and Francesca Lia Block. I hope you like the rest of PROM, Sam!
