Sunday Morning scribbling and a website question

Had a good working day yesterday and never made it to the grocery store. Mer and Mike went shopping after dinner and came back with some clothes, a Donato’s pizza, and a movie – Dodgeball. They made me stop working and chill with them. Yes, the movie was stupid. But it was a good stupid. A painful, predictable stupid and it was fun to laugh with them. So it was a good night.

Back to work in a few minutes. I’ve been neck-deep in the American Revolution, comparing interpretations of various historians and trying to understand the events that unfolded both in the context of their own time period, and through our modern lens. It makes my head hurt. It also really pisses me off when different books have different dates for the SAME EXACT THING. Argh!

So today is more of the history stuff, then THE SUPERBOWL!!!!!!!! Philly has gone nuts, no other way to describe it. I’ll report on that later.

I do have a question for everyone out there – what is not working about my website? I love it (thank you, thank you theoblack), but I keep getting email from kids doing author reports who want information about me. We have a whole section of the site called About Me, but I guess they aren’t seeing it. Any suggestions?

  1. I’d recommend you put the titles permanently on each of the buttons rather than requiring someone to mouse over them to find out what each one does.

(And though you didn’t ask, the page took quite a while to load – you might want to have a non-flash site option for those of us still using dialup)

  4. Putting up a non-flash version is part of our long-term planning. I understand the frustrations of the slow connection – lived with that for way too long.

One of the challenges of the site has been to figure out who the core audience is and design it accordingly. Right now it is set up for teens. They generally have good Internet connections and enjoy the Flash surprises that pop up when they mouse over graphics. But I’m beginning to think we need to compromise a little for the sake of everybody else.

I’ll talk to Theo about it. Thanks for comments.

  7. shiny!

I forgot to mention that I do very much like the look of the site – nice and clean and worked well with all the browsers I tried with it.

  10. Some kids may not be figuring out the rollovers, but there will also, I’ve found, always be a small number of people (adults as well as kids) who no matter what you do simply don’t see the information that’s right in front of them, and just go straight to the email link.
