Fly, Eagles, Fly….

….on the road to victory!

This is the All-Eagles post. The boys in Green play in the Superbowl on Sunday and Philadelphia, my adopted hometown, is busting its buttons. People here live, breathe, eat, sleep, and dream Eagles, even if they don’t like football.

Our current slogan is “one team city dream.” Does Boston have a slogan? I think not.

The competitive possibilities are endless.

There is plenty of room for historians to discuss the contributions made by both cities to the American Revolution (another obsession of mine). Which city truly deserves the moniker “Home of Liberty”? Boston had the Tea Party, an occupation by British troops, a battle or two, and a few riots. Philly had all that except for the tea party, which suits us just fine, thanks. We also had the writing and reading of the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congresses and the Constitutional Convention. No contest!

Who has better food? Philly: cheesesteaks, pretzels, cheesesteaks, Tastykakes, scrapple, and cheesesteaks. Boston: beans.

Mascot? Philly: the majestic, soaring eagle. Boston: a patriot. OK, that one’s a toss-up.

Quarterback? Donovan McNabb, all the way. Not only is he a smart, hard-working, disciplined athlete, he went to Syracuse University and he has a nice mom. Tom who?

Beauty, integrity, and people? Boston is a nice place, no argument there. It is a Hub of the Universe of Enlightenment, transcending expectations for refinement in an urban setting. But Philly is real. Real people. Real jobs. Real arguments. Real problems. Real solutions. This city is a family that wears its heart on our sleeves. Yo, you got a problem with that?

Enough foaming at the mouth for one day. I really am going to write today…

…and dream of victory!

PS – Book/writing stuff tomorrow, I promise.

  1. I believe our slogan is “Neener neener – we won last year ….”

Oh and how can you not love Tom Brady? Scrappy fillin who steps up when the main quarterback got injured and leads them to the first franchise Superbowl victory? And then repeats two years later?

  4. No disrespect to Tom and your boys – they deserved every Superbowl ring they won.

But we’ve waited twenty years. 20. 2-0. Two decades for any kind of national sports championship. That’s a loooooooong time for a sports-crazed city. I know youse had that baseball drought there for a while, but your basketball and football teams filled the void. We’re hungry!

In truth, I think it’s going to be one heck of a game. I hope it is close and hard-fought. I hate Superbowl blow-outs.

    Let the best team win!!

  7. welcome . . .

hey Laurie, being the techno dork that I am, I welcomed you over on Sharon’s journal. What can I say? I am new to LJ and still trying to figure out a lot. Besides Lara’s list, another writer you know on lj is Linda Sue, lsparkreader.
As far as the Superbowl is concerned, I have friends in Boston and PA so I am staying neutral (but you do make a good case for the food)and am only watching the commercials–which should be entertaining enough.

  13. Re: welcome . . .

Thanks for the tip about Linda Sue. She’s the best. I’ll hop over and take a peek.

I see that you’ll be at NCTE in November – I’ll see you there!

I love you. I can comment on you now. Yes! Be prepared. I don’t think you realize what you’ve gotten yourself into.

  19. YES!

YES!! GO EAGLES!! You rock! Our whole school was singing “Fly, Eagles Fly!” all day. It was heaven. My homeroom teacher has turned our homeroom into a living Philly sanctuary. It’s awesome. Someone literally threw a lunch tray at the principal for wearing a Patriots jersey. Good times, good times.

  22. Yes, but everybody in Philly is sure in their secret hearts that they will lose. It’s the truth and you know it. I love Philly and Philadelphians–they are about as genuine as it gets–but you’ve gotta admit that they have issues.

I only wish I could watch, but the game starts at midnight here in Germany and the Champions sports bar in the Marriot probably won’t be open until 3 AM. Sigh.

    By the way, Go Eagles!!!

  25. Fly fly fly!

Laurie, I will be cheering for the Eagles too. Wish you lived nearby; we could do a Superbowl thang together, you know, literary analysis of the ads, lyrical descriptions of the plays in between nacho crunching and screaming wildly for McNabb, whose 14-second scramble earlier in the season is my personal pick for Play of the Year.

(But please don’t get me started on the long-suffering sports-fan rant. We Cubs fans got you all beat…)

Still finding my feet with this journaling stuff, I guess friends savvier than me sort of linked us up in some magical cyberspatial way… Can’t wait to read PROM. xo, LS.

    Hey there!

Pigskin litcrit! That is an awesome idea.

How about next year? I move up to Mexico, NY (near Oswego) at the end of the summer.

I bow to your superior suffering.

  31. Pats fan, but sympathetic

Well, I had to root for the Patriots (my husband asks for so little 😉

But, he and I are both sympathetic to Eagles fans (we know the long suffering road too well, being Red Sox fans). Must have been brutal for you guys.
