Born into freedom in Columbus, NJ. Served in the 2nd New Jersey Regiment of the Continental Army under Captain Lowery. Cromwell fought at the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Monmouth and Yorktown. He participated in the dangerous crossing of the Delaware River in 1776 and survived the winter at Valley Forge. In all, Cromwell served in the Continental Army for six years and nine months, almost the entire length of the revolution.
