My Friday Five

First, I owe a shout-out to Lydia, whose older sister, Elena, works at Writer’s House in New York. ::waves from couch:: She said really sweet things about you, Lydia!

Now – my Five Friday Things:

1. My surgery is over and my leg is in the air and healing nicely. (Thanks for all the warm wishes.) BH tells me that when I was coming out of the anesthesia I tried to negotiate with the doctor and get him to agree that I could go running in four days instead of two weeks. I do not remember this. Both the doc and BH were amused.

2. Two weeks without running is a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long time.

3. Pain pills make you stupid, but are useful when you need to sleep.

4. Two weeks = fourteen days = seven missed running days = 35 missed miles. Humpf.

5. I am not in New York for BEA because of The Leg. So here are my photos from last week’s New York City trip.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic This is Kevin Lewis, my Simon & Schuster editor, with me. We’re holding Thank You, Sarah, and Fever 1793, our past projects, and drafts of Independent Dames and Chains, my books that Kevin is publishing in 2008.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Derry Wilkens, the Publicity Goddess at Viking/Penguin who put together the Twisted book tour.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Sharyn November, my Viking Editor and sister of the spirit.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic In between meetings I snuck down to Books of Wonder, one of the best children’s bookstores in the country.

Does anyone have any BEA stories?

  1. “Books of Wonder” is right beside “Cupcake Cafe”? That is such an awesome combination. Book shop, sustenance, book shop, sustenance. 🙂

  2. Knitting, that’s what you need to take your mind off your healing leg! Good to hear surgery went well, and you’ll be up and running again soon.

That bookshop looks glorious, and I totally agree that its juxtaposition with the Cupcake Cafe is inspired. I do believe a bookshop / yarn shop / foodie trip to NYC is in order!

Is Chains the manuscript you just completed?

  3. when i was coming out of the anesthesia once, the doctor said my face looked just as good as it did before, (i had eye surgery and my whole eye turned a lovly purple, so so flattering) and apparently my answer was, “yeahhhhh i know. thanks, wait what?”

and two weeks without running? i don’t think i could make it. i hope you get well soon!

  4. Hi, sorry this doesn’t relate to your original post but…

I’m doing a project about your book and its adaption to a movie, Speak. I’ve read, adored and related to this book many times over and read it again for my English project.
Sorry for badgering you with my highschool-ness and fan-ness, I couldn’t find a contact email on your site, sorry for badgering you here if there was one. I’d just love to ask you a few questions about the book, and it’s not just so I can get a cheap start to the assignment, I’ve read your interviews and all the summaries, I’d just still love to have a few unanswered questions, well answered. Don’t worry, they’re short.
Sorry for the long explaination and tracking you down to this site.
If you’re uninterested or just not in the mood or anything, simply ignore this message.
But if you’re interested, just send me a “Hi” message on my journal (~greyrooms) on the latest journal entry.

    🙂
    thanks reading this.

  5. Book Review 6/3/07

Hi Laurie– Pamela checking in. Just wanted to give you a heads-up about what I believe is a typo when addressing SPEAK (Melinda vs Miranda) in this Sunday’s NYT’s Book Review section and your TWISTED.
See the review online, written by John Green: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/books/review/Green-t.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Hope you’re healing, and, ironically, typing this while watching a panel discussion about “Ethics in Book Reviewing” from BEA on BOOK TV,

    Pamela

  6. yay

I knew Twisted would be wonderful!

I hope your leg heals up well- make sure to keep off it, even though its hard, not being able to run and all.

    Take care of yourself!

  7. It’s Lydia;

This is Lyia, and i want to thank you so much for giveing me a shoutout.
you probably get this alot, but you are my favorite author. i adore your writing style. its amazing, and very inspirational. i have yet to read your book Speak, because i have been trying to find it. But i have lost track of how many times i have read Catalyst and Prom and Twisted. its great that you dont write about How girls fall in love, go through heartbreak and then get the guy. With your books i feel like your writing real things, and about real issues.
you dont understand how much i have been nagging my sister to give me that signed book of Twisted. 😀
    thanks again!

  9. This is Lydia;

Hi, its lydia, and i just want to say thank you so much for giving me a shoutout.

you hear this a lot i bet, but i’m still going to say it. you are my favorite author. its great that you dont write about the default Y.A subjects: having a guy hit on you, you think you hate him, he loves you, you get in a fight, you find out your i love wiht him, and happily ever after. What i like about your books, is that you write about real issues. And you dont make it seem like the world revolves around that one book character. What i have recognized through reading your books, is that every body has a story, and though you might be the main character of one story, another revolves around somebody entirly different. you dont make the world seem small. i have yet to read Speak, but i have read Twisted and Catalyst and Prom so much, one more time and they would fall apart:D

your books are truely inspirational and once again, thanks.

    -Lydia
