From Warsaw, With Love

I made it to Poland! And I am having a blast – this is an AMAZING city and country.

Mostly, I have only good news to tell you. But there is one piece of bad news: the Internet connection at my hotel costs $1/minute. Yep. So I’m going to keep this short: the highlights of the last two days.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic After a long and crowded flight and getting lost in the maze they call Heathrow airport, I was very happy to see this sign.

New Polish word: lody I ate hazlenut lody (ice cream) in Old Town then wandered around soaking in the city.

More later in the week. Tomorrow I get to start working with the kids at the American School!

  1. THANK YOU for posting, Laurie!! The weather here is dark and grim, and your pictures from Poland made me smile. Good to see you’re there safely – looking forward to more pics and stories of your adventures!!

  2. they aren’t fully trash cans, but recycle cans. they have them everywhere in Poland for paper, plastic and ?? there were mostly three in a row where I went. I don’t remember what the third one was for. But I loved them when I went two years ago.

  3. why exactly are you in poland..i was just there in march…but i was visiting concentration camps. its a very depressing country. the people arent the nicest..so beware..many will be very cold to you.

  4. Apparently “Szkło” means “Glass” (as seen on… the large green receptacle in figure 5). It looks really interesting there, i really like the recycle cans. Hope the school visit goes well.

  5. you are my hero

You are my hero. I don’t tell that to everyone. at all. but you book, Speak, just gives me a comfort zone. no, i have not been raped but for some reason it was such a comfort zone for me. In my theatre class, yep i’m in the “thespian” group, Speak is the selection i have chosen to read for contest. I have seen the movie and read the book a large number of times. I just want to thank you. I don’t have a live journal account but i do have a e-mail baileyx30@aol.com and i was wondering how to pronounce your middle name. I also think Speak should have a sequel. I know in your Platinum Edition of your book you say you will most likely not go for a sequel, but i hope you do. Thank you.
Oh, I also loved Prom, Catalyst and Twisted. I haven’t found you other book Fever 1793.
    Love,
    Bailey

  6. Remember you are a tourist

Just a loving reminder that you do need to come home and stay for awhile…so don’t get too comfy over there. BH

  7. I am in Warsaw. I have found the people here to be very nice. They aren’t all grins and loud laughter the way Americans are, but they are kind and very happy to talk. (I imagine Americans must seem like large exhuberant puppies to people from other countries. I am sure that is how the Poles see me.)

I won’t have a chance to visit concentration camps this trip, but I would like to come back to do so. i’ll be visiting sites associted with the Jewish Ghetto Uprising later in the week.

  8. When you think about a career in writing, rarely do you think about the awesome travling/promoting part! That is so awesome! I am so happy for you! That sounds so great, taking pictures of trash cans and whatnot… ah the glamorous life…. 🙂
