Somewhat sated

That sure felt good.

I read “The Truth-Teller’s Tale” by Sharon Shinn, “Fay” by Larry Brown, “Wish You Were Here, the Official Biography of Douglas Adams,” by Nick Webb, and “Arthur & George” by Julian Barnes.

I think I need a Guilt-free Reading Month….

There will be little reading the rest of the week – I have much to do before I leave for Poland on Friday. Details to come soon.

Have any of you ever been to Poland?

  1. You’re going to Poland? How cool is that! Does that mean you won’t be at the Azar Nafisi lecture Thursday night?

I admire your ability to read so much … I used to be a voracious reader, but something happened. I can’t seem to focus enough to finish a book anymore, which makes me very sad. I am almost done with my annual reading of Little Women, though, and I swear I find more in it with every reading.

  2. “Have any of you ever been to Poland?”

It’s one of the many countries my ancestors were kicked out of. But it’s very cool you’re going there.

  3. FAY is an incredible book. Larry Brown was amazing. I love Douglas Adams so will have to check out WISH YOU WERE HERE.

    Nope on Poland.

  4. I used to moderate a Southern fiction bookclub and Fay was one of the out-of-the-park picks. We all unequivocally loved it and do you know how rare that is? Well, it’s pretty darned rare.

  5. I’ve never been to Poland but it’s the #1 European country I’d like to visit right now.

I want to spend August in Copenhagen (if someone will rent me a room!) and if I do I’ll definitely hop over to Gdansk. It looks beautiful.

    Have fun!

  6. I really want to go, but it depends on one million things being accomplished between now and then.

    Cross your fingers.

(I’ve been through that lack-of-reading-concentration-thing a couple of times in the past decade. It was awful. Everytime so far, my concentration has come back when other life pressures eased up. Hang in there.)

  7. Poland?

Are you going there on vacation? Or for some other reason? Very exciting.

Speaking of exciting, I wonder if you’ve seen Sarah Dessen’s LJ entry for today?

  8. Re: Poland?

Yeah, I saw Sarah’s surprise!! How wonderful!

I am going to Warsaw to speak at a school there. Details later in the week, I hope.

  9. Yikes! – and i felt accomplished for reading 25 pages this weekend…

Never been off the continent but mom spoke some Polish to me when i was little. Hope your trip goes well!

  10. my mother was born in Poland (she grew up here, but my grandparents still don’t speak English), I’ve never been there but she went back to tour the country when she was 15, and I guess it’s a beautiful place. I don’t know which parts you’re planning to visit or what you’re going to do there, but wherever you go, have a wonderful time 🙂

  11. guilt free reading

Speaking of guilt free reading. I spent my spring break reading none other than Twisted. Once I started I could not put the book down. I know the book may be a little mature for my 8th graders but the main character reminds me of a student I have. I wish I could share with you just how much my student is like Tyler. The book is wonderful. My other friends who are teaching high school are promoting the books to their classes.
I am also rereading Jennifer Weiner’s Good in Bed since there is another book coming out about Cannie.

  12. hi! i’m glad your tour went well and you got back home safe and sound. i’ve never actually been to poland, but i am from polish descent because my late grandmother was polish. my one best friend is polish too. where in poland are you traveling? are you traveling anywhere else in europe? if so i’m jealous lol. have a safe trip! (i’m off to providence, RI tomorrow to see one of my best friends in a musical at her college. i’ll let you know how it goes. miss you and can’t wait to see you on may 11th! =) ♥

  13. what i read over spring break =)

oh and i read twisted over my break lol. and i read their eyes were watching god for school. and some short stories: “The Book of Sand” by Jorges Luis Borges, “Death Constant Beyond Love” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and “The Cost of Living” by Carlos Fuentes. i had to read them for school as well. have you read any of them? i thought they were good, but “The Book of Sand” was somewhat odd. hope you read some great books too! =)

  14. weekend

I watched- Ed Wood, & Slim Hopes
and read- Here I Love You by Pablo Neruda, The Best Cigarette by Billy Collins, One Art by Elizabeth Bishop, Anactoria by Sappho, & maggie and molly and milly and may by E. E. Cummings.
Not as much as I had hoped, but it’s better than nothing. I hate school. Sometimes it gets in the way of learning.
