The not-fun part of nine feet plus of snow

Geesh, what a day. It started out decent. The paperwork is almost done, and I’ve had fun answering email from friends all over the country who’ve read about our Snow Adventure in the New York Times, among other places. We even got to the gym, anticipating that we won’t be able to get there for a few days.

Why, you ask?

Because of the next storm. Cue the ominous music.

(Edited at 8pm to add: the snow has started.)

BH spent the afternoon helping out a friend in Oswego whose newly renovated rental house had its pipes freeze and burst and pretty much ruin everything. The insurance guy said an adjuster won’t be able to look at it for at least a week and half because of all the claims that are (ahem) snowballing in this region.

We know of one house in our town that suffered a catastrophic roof collapse.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic While BH was in Oswego, I dug out the woodpile. We’ve gone through most of the wood stored in the garage and I wanted to bring in a bunch from outside in anticipation of the next storm. The snow has compacted some. Moving it wasn’t too bad; it was like heavy styrofoam. I carried in a cord of wood and split some kindling.

All is not doom and gloom. The streets of Mexico are completely clear of snow. Everybody has been pitching in helping neighbors. We’re all set even if we get snowed in for another week, and we have someone on the way to clear the driveway again and work on the roof. AND I got to the library yesterday so I have plenty to read.

  1. Right now I’m reading THE POE SHADOW, by Matthew Pearl.

I am liking it, not loving it. But coming from me, that is high praise. I am really enjoying his research and the set-up of the story, though I think the exclamation points are tiresome and the section in Paris (where I am now) seems kind of a waste of time.

I am one of the most critical, bitchiest readers on the planet, which is why I don’t post about what I’m reading very much.

  2. Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usWe are having the biggest blizzard of the season here. ½ inch of snow already, and it’s still piling on!

I am glad to hear that you are making it thru this snow event ok. Snow event snow event snow event. Hope your next storm is less newsworthy.

  3. I’m on the reference desk here at work, getting ready to bail and head out into the snow. I wonder if we’ll really get the 2-3 feet they’re predicting. Still, it makes me feel wimpy compared to my fine neighbors to the north.

Your little ladybug made me grin! I hope she brings you good luck and visions of spring 🙂

  4. i’m glad everyone’s okay =)
