  1. I hate “kiddie book” – it makes me die a little inside.

(But sort of HA on And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street – that should be his memoir title)

  2. I hope it’s all right to friend your journal; I just discovered that you have an LJ today as I finished reading Speak (which I admire in all kinds of ways).

Mine is a bit of a lurker’s journal, a step in supporting my decision to write a YA novel (especially now at the deep background level, where it feels like nothing is happening). But I had to delurk over this entry, since it’s one of the things that makes me demented. The “celebrities can write children’s books” thing is bad enough, but Gotti? ::headdesk headdesk headdesk::

And these books are always filled with all the Don’ts that serious writers find in articles about writing children’s fiction. I remember riding an escalator down to the children’s level of a Barnes & Noble and having the picture book title Freddie the Fly come into view, and the first thing that popped into my head was “Some famous person wrote that,” and lo, it was Charles Grodin.

    But Gotti. Wow.
