pretending to be asleep

So the foot that the doc sliced open? Healing. I left the house for the first time yesterday. I can almost walk without a limp, as long as I walk slowly.

But the back? Different story. When my foot was killing me last week and I was getting around the house with a crutch or hopping, or hurtling myself from one room to the next, I apparently tore or strained the Big Muscle in my back that is connected to all other muscles. But I am so sick of all this pain stuff I am not talking about it any more. In fact, I am pretending that I am sleeping right now, and this is all a bad dream.

Christmas officially beings at our house today, with the arrival of our daughter Meredith. YAY!!!!!!

And yes, I am still revising my book. Thanks to all of you who wrote in the great revision questions. If you care about revision, be sure to read through the discussions that cropped up in the comments section of last Friday’s post.

In reading news, I finished Anansi Boys, by my all-time fav, Neil Gaiman. I loved it. Now, when not writing or thrashing on the floor clutching painful body parts, I’m reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, by Susanna Clarke and loving that, too. And I just ordered a bunch of new books at the library, so I am a happy camper, (edit) a whiny, happy camper.

  1. Ms. Anderson, any idea when your work in progress would hit the bookshelves? (Giving time for editing and printing etc….)
This way we could all mark our calendars and start the countdown!

Hope you feel better in time for the holidays.

Ms. Anderson, I am fascinated at your live journal and the things that you share about writing. I am a teacher and will be teaching Speak for the first time in January and am very excited to see what is out there for both myself and my students. Since I always thought I would be a writer myself and really have wanted to start something ever since I began teaching (five years ago now…hmmmm…) I am in awe of what you have accomplished and the vigor with which you write and revise.

I also want to add that I grew up in Liverpool, NY and enjoy reading novels about Syracuse high schools, knowing the dreary winters and lake effect snow…

I have read Speak and am halfway through Catalyst, no doubt I will be reading Prom by the weekend.

You are an inspiration to writers who were not sure they could write.

  7. Ouch. That foot must hurt! I hate it when one thing heals and another problem pops up. Hope you feel better!!

And in any case, Merry Christmas. 🙂

Have you read any books by Sophie Kinsella?

  10. Speak

i just wanted to say that we have been reading your book in class and i have really enjoyed it! Although i dont have depression I seen many things that relate to my own life. I think that what makes the book so good is how real it acutally is to the world! I just wanted to let you know that you book touched my heart and that I think that it is a must read for all teens.

  13. Oh I read Johnathen Strange and Mr Norell I loved it. when you think about it that Mr. Norell is a concieted old thing wouldn’t you think? Well anyway let me know when you finished so I can know what you thought of it. I’m reading Inkspell by Cornelia Funke right now and my Aunt patty is getting me the 5th and 6th princess diaries books for christmas. what more could a girl ask for? On a related note I put one of your books Catalyst and put it in front of my 7 month old niece she got super excited and so it leads me to conclude that she will be a Laurie Halse Anderson fan before she can even say your name isn’t that cool? bye! – Jessica from S.B.H.S

  16. New Topic, I Know!

I recently went to the movies and saw The Chronicles of Narnia and King Kong (movie hopping! yay!) as well as previews for The DaVinci Code (all of those movies had been made based on extremely successful books). I started thinking that some movies that are made based on books are done extremely well (ie: King Kong, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Jaws etc.) while some however, are not done very well at all (the newest Harry Potter for one). I was wondering as an author, how you feel about those books that get moved to the big screen and are thoroughly butchered. How would you feel if you recieved an offer for a book of yours to be made into a feature Hollywood film. I know Speak was done recently as a ‘made for TV’ movie although I have yet to see it and am speaking about a bit of a larger scale. Thanks a lot Ms. Anderson! Or Laurie… or whichever it is you prefer 🙂

  25. Would anyone here happen to know of an evil/creepy/chilling/or just plain wierd short story, story or poem?

I have to find one then make a children’s book with it, creating bubbly cartoons which would make it appealing to children. If it’s a short poem I can keep the original words, but if its a story, I’m supposed to change the words but keep the main storyline. It’s a very odd assignment, and I haven’t been able to find anything that would be suitable.

    Thanks?!

  28. Sorry, can’t help you there. But if I come across one, then I’ll post it on this blog.

Do you mean just a nice, witch-y tale for children about Halloween or something? Or, like The Ring except in a book?

  31. creepy stuff

try ‘Annabell Lee’ (poem) by Edgar Allan Poe. or any of his work. they are very unsettling. The Cask of Amontillado (short story) was a recent assignment for my class, and I thought it was very good. The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, just any of his stuff.

  34. I mean one like the Ring.

Its supposed to be a challenge for me to take a(what a highschool student) would think of as a scary/chilling story, and make it appeal to little kids.

Like if someone died in it, I would just draw a little cartoon lying down.

  37. The only creepy stories I can think of are The Tell-Tale Heart (by Edgar Allan Poe) and Lamb to the Slaughter (by Roald Dahl). They’re both murder stories, and a little freaky. They’re written by good authors, though, and the website is http://www.bnl.com/shorts/.

It’s probably not good, but it’s something.

  40. The MILO RAMBALDI Files

We live in a world of three dimensions…..this is the world that is recognized by the 5 senses…but yet there is the world of spirit…that knows no time or place….it has 4 dimensions and can be seen and heard by practiced individuals…Jesus…Bhudda….Mohammed etc.

The all seeing eye ….the pyramids were really built by the Atlantians after the destruction, they are over 14,000 years old! The blocks were cut by lazers and moved by anti-gravitational rods. Don’t let these geek scientists fool you, we can’t duplicate them today. Read Edgar Cayce and learn more about them, for they were used as healing centers throughout the world. The top of the pyramids were capped with a green crystal that sent out healing electro-magnetic waves and also communicated from pyramid to pyramid around the world, this includes a sunken pyramid near the burmuda triangle, the pilots and sailors that were “lost” got caught in what is known as an “envelope of time” as the earth’s atmosphere became electrically charged, anyone or anything caught near this sunken pyramid is transported to the next dimension. If you think this is crazy, explain how huge shipping vessels and naval planes just disappeared into thin air??? They scanned the ocean bottoms and found nothing!!! If we think we have reached the pinnacle of science…we are far wrong…our ancestors had acheived this and much more…we just had to start over again….the libraries of Alexandria had this information written about and Solon learned about this ancient race of people…you want proof you say??? OK….under the right foot of the Sphinx is a tunnel…known as the Hall of Wisdom, revealed by Edgar Cayce…he predicted the time and date 50 years ago of when we would discover it’s existance….we did exactly as he prophesied..found it…now we are waiting for Cairo to allow an excavation…inside they will find formulas to advanced physics, mathematics etc. only a holy man will be able to decifer these symbols..it will happen in the next 10 years..wait and see…you really think we are the only people in this Universe??? Think again…..

  52. Re: New Topic, I Know!

Having a book transformed into a movie is a bit of a gamble. Movies and books are very different – more different than they are alike, even though both are vehicles for telling stories. If I ever get an offer to have one of my books made into a big movie, I’ll consider it seriously, but cautiously.

  61. Ok, First off, how do you like to start writing your stories? Do you like to plan it out or just go into it without much plans. Where do your ideas come from? Especially with Speak, I swear I have read it at least 6 times. I mean when I read your books I am not just reading. Its like I become the characters (Melinda mostly). How do you get your books so descriptive without overdescribing everything?

You really captured what high school, any school can be like. I had troubles like melinda in 6th grade. I wasnt raped but I was bullied horribly and your book it was really touching reading what I basically went through. The verbal abuse, the physical abuse, and from her own friends, it hurts and you understood that perfectly.
Thanks for taking time to do this for me, I really appreciate it. You are like a celebrity to me.
    Much Thanks,
