Serenitember

I’d like to propose a modification to the calendar. I need an extra month.

We will call it Serenitember and insert it between November and December. There will be no work days in Serenitember, no school either. But this is a sacred month, devoted to the sole purpose of giving all of us the chance to get caught up on everything that we are hopelessly behind on. The anarchists will ignore the rules, of course, that’s just the way they are. But for those of us who take this type of thing seriously, here’s how it works.

Rules of Serenitember
1. We all get at least eight hours of sleep every night this month, this holy month.
2. We answer all email, all written mail, empty inboxes and balance checkbooks this month, this holy month.
3. We complete all undone job/school work this month, this holy month.
(3a. No new assignments or projects may be started!)
4. We complete all undone home projects this month, this holy month.
5. We clean everything which must be cleaned, this month, this holy month.
6. We eat and drink sensibly and we exercise like wild people, this month, this holy month, in anticipation of the feasting to come,
7. We make the time to read for fun this month, this holy month.
8. We make the time for slow dinners with family and friends, this month, this holy month.
9. We light bonfires in every town and burn away all of our Communal Guilt for the Unfinished Task, this month, this holy month,
10. On the last day of Serenitember, we dance.

What would you finish if we could create this extra month with the sweep of a wand?

  1. Yes! I want Serenitember! That would be beyond awesome. What would I finish? My editing, that’s due January 1st. As in 22 days from now. Yep, in 528 hours. 31,680 minutes. Not that I’m stressed out or anything . . . nope, not at all, not me.

    (Okay, just a tad.)

  4. You’re brilliant. I want this month. I would clean my entire house, finish my assignment for school that’s due in two weeks, and read the stack of books I’ll be returning to the library (unread once again). I would rubber-stamp holiday cards and send them to all my friends. I would exercise like mad. I would spend lots of quality time with my kidlet. Okay, now would be good – when do we get this month?

if only serenitember could exist in real life:-). then the world would be perfect. i agree with the whole no school/work thing too. it’d be nice for me to get all my hw done and get caught up, and answer all my e-mail and everything, and sleep in, and the bonfire and dancing and anything else i may have forgotten. i wish it actually existed:-(. this is really off-topic but i wanted to say THANK YOU for writing Thank You Sarah because it’s helped me a lot with my history critique of literature (i’m critiquing an article on thanksgiving and how it’s changed overtime and sarah hale is in it). i used some of the details from the “A Feast of Facts” section along with the article. thanks again. well i gtg. ttyl. -ash 🙂
p.s. sorry i posted such a long comment:-(!

  10. AMAZING. LET’S DO IT.

I would use the time to research all of the different options I have open to me when my present fellowship ends (at the end of July). In addition I would make time every day for dancing–a different style of dance each day…. Monday West African, Tuesday Ballet, Wednesday Modern (Graham-style), Thursday Modern (Limon-style), Friday Hip-Hop, Saturday Contact Improv, Sunday Tango… And everything would be free this month. A break from worrying about money would be amazing for folks…

I’d also borrow lots of your rules and clean clean clean… and feast and foster general merriment in every aspect of my human life!

🙂 Thanks for the creative query!

  13. Count me in. I’ve been neglecting laundry and dishes while writing – I could definitely use an extra month without new obligations. I should also spend extra time with my girls since they often end up coloring in my office while I’m on the computer.

  16. I’d use the time to catch up with friends who I don’t see often. Seems that I make plans to hang out and the next thing I know, months have passed since I’ve seen them. *sigh*

  19. Oh, don’t tease. This is my dream. Even to just accomplish #1 on that list would be bliss. I’ve often wondered where I could find that clock or watch or whatever from some old Hitchcock/Twilight Zone thing that made everything else in the world stop. I wouldn’t use it frivolously, just maybe three days a month or so. But I like your idea better!

  22. I would finish moving into my brother’s room BEFORE he comes home from college for Christmas so I will at least get some time to be in there by myself.

  25. Well it better be an extra long month and if money and transportation also weren’t problems:

I’d get all my back homework done and edit/write poetry and read oddles of books (Postcards from the Edge, Fever 1793, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Feed, When Dad Killed Mom, Winter, Chinese Handcuffs, Boy meets Boy, Talking in the Dark, The Turn of the Screw, The Hours, Bird by Bird, and every Pablo Neruda poem ever written), take photos, clean off my desk & dresser, watch a few movies (The Hours, Mindwalk, The Forgotten, Adaptation, Sense & Sensibility, Remains of the Day, Love Actually, Postcards from the Edge, Romance and Cigarettes, The Life of David Gale, The Point!), go through my clothes and get rid of the ones I never wear, play with babies/children, hang out with my brothers, volunteer at a shelter, visit Yorkshire, England (my heart is homesick).

  28. On the one hand, I applaud the sanity.

On the other, this is def throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Mr. School Official, are you afraid of parents? If not, then grow a pair and mandate that the prom be held in the gym. If the kids’ parents want to embarrass themselves by throwing way too much money and Grown-Up Stuff at their precious babies, then find a way so that they have to do it at events that are not school-sanctioned.

    Duh.

  34. Count me IN!!!!! I’m so crazed I can’t even think straight enough to make a list of everything I’d want to get done in this extra month, but VACATION would be number one on that list. Bob and I were trying to figure out when to take a vacation, and we can’t find a good time when there isn’t some other conflict with work or visitors or life in general. (He lost almost 2 weeks of vacation this year alone.) Oops..didn’t mean to make this a whine. Must pack….

*hugs* Happy holidays my friend. Throw a snowball for me! (FOR me,…not at me! ;))

  40. I really really want this month!! First I would do all the cleaning and organinizing that I’ve been meaning to do and catch up in my schoolwork. Then I would use the rest of it to work on my novel, sleep, run, catch up on my lists of books I’ve been meaning to read for a longtime, sleep, play some trumpet, and sleep. I wish rule #1 could be true all year round… as if.

  43. What I’m afraid of: large corporations with commercial interests would find a way to turn “Serenitember, this holy month” into “one stop shopping for all your Serenitember needs! Make sure you have a new memory foam mattress to ensure eight full hours of sleep! Do you need any budgeting software? How about cleaning products and hardware to give your home a sparkling makeover! Martha Stewart’s Serenitember Special Issue! Fitness club specials the month of Serenitember! Make sure you have Dr. Phil’s Serenitember Serenity Diet Book! Barnes & Noble pre-Serenitember sale!”

    And all that.

Not that I think it’s a bad idea–in fact, I quite love it. But in the wrong hands, it could turn into the same thing we’re trying to escape from, no? So here’s my proposal: Serenitember exists only for the right people, the pure of heart who will not use Serenitember for exploitation or financial gain. Anyone who tries to undermine the purpose of Serenitember gets sent straight to December, do not pass go, do not collect $200. It would be sort of a cross between the Twilight Zone thing and Brigadoon.

    That’s what I’m talkin’ about.

A month to be free, and do whatever you feel without the frustration of the real world outside? I could live with that 🙂

I would definitely finish all my college applications, essays, scholarship applications, scholarship essays, etc., etc., etc. Too many deadlines around the holidays! What’s up with that?
But after all that college crap was out of the way, in this holy month I would also get all my xmas shopping done so that it’s not two weeks before xmas and I have no gifts for anyone…at all…
Beware the mall. That’s all I have to say.

  73. On the last day of September, I don’t dance.
I run around in my skivvies.
    I’m a pirate.
    Yo ho.

  76. Serenitember

I whole heartily agree that a month like Serenitember should exist. I don’t know if you remember me, I’m the library intern from Draper Middle School, and anyways…let’s just say after your visit things kind of went downhill for me and I could have definitely used an extra 30 days in wondrous Serenitember in order to straighten out my life. let me know if you make any progress on the whole Serenitember month thing because it sounds absolutely wonderful…ahh, a whole 30 days to catch up with life. with wonderful ideas like that it’s no wonder that you’re a writer 🙂

  79. I love the book Speak!

    Dear Laurie,
I am a huge fan of your novel “Speak.” I have read the book three times this month! I read your interview on the back of the novel “Speak.” You are a wonderful writer/author. It would be great if you could come and visit our school! If you can do so, I beg you to! My school is called Sherburne-Earlville Central School. We have our own site. It’s secsd.org. Please check it out whenever you have the time. My English class read your novel “Speak” and all of my classmates said that they absolutely loved it so it would be a great if you could come and talk to our school. We are not far from where you live. Only a few hours or so away from Pennsylvannia.
