Thunderstorms

As I write this, the weather radar shows red clouds moving our way, which means lots of wind, thunder, and lightning, which means we’ll lose power so I’ll make this short. I think the speech went very well last night. The audience was marvelous – Syracuse has some righteous librarians and other folks who love books!! Thanks to everyone who organized the event and attended. Special thanks to two people: novembersnow for representing LJ land, and to Ms. Marshall, who was one of my high school English teachers… one of the very few I really liked. (She was the teacher in charge of the school newspaper and literary magazine, that’s how cool she was.)

Channel 10 interviewed me but I can’t bring myself to watch it, so if any of you other Central New Yorkers see the piece, let me know what you think.

We didn’t get out of the library until after 8 pm and I was starving because I was too nervous before the speech to eat anything, so BH and I decided to eat at Armory Square, a cool downtown restaurantish shopping area of Syracuse. We ate at Kitty Hoynes and recommend it highly. The whole area was kicking, especially for a Wednesday night in September. I am really proud of my hometown. Are you looking for a place to move to? Come to Syracuse!

More writing today. I am really happy with the first three-quarters of the book…. today’s scenes are when the main character….. well, I don’t want to give anything away.

Thank you Alyssa M for your inspiring email. Keep writing!

added later I forgot to say “yo” to Rebecca the Librarian who has been living the geography of my life, only in reverse.

    You are such a tease!

Glad your speechifying went well. Are the leaves turning in the southern tier already?

  4. It was lovely meeting you yesterday. (I’m sorry if I seemed skittish; I’m absurdly shy and very bad at introducing myself to people.)

I thought your speech was terrific. As a magazine editor who’s both worked in children’s book publishing and trained to be an English teacher, I have very strong opinions on censorship, and it was a real pleasure to hear similar sentiments expressed so articulately–and to be part of such a like-minded crowd!

  7. OK, so you’re into Xena, right? You gotta go see Serenity, the firefly movie. It’s opening tomorrow and there’s this awesome chick named River who’s totally a warrior princess, without the princess part.

It’s going to be amazing and I’d hate for anyone to miss out on it. 🙂

  10. excited

I am so excited I started my Practicum, which is the preliminary to student teaching, this week and currently they are reading the Odyssey but my teacher told me today that they will be reading Speak next. I got so excited telling her that I had done my author study on you this summer in my class and that I stay in contact with you through the LJ and that the students can talk to you on here. She was really interested and said maybe I could teach some of the book to the class, so the first adolescent lit. book I teach will be yours. I know I sound gushy but who cares. So down the road you will be getting some LJ entries from kids doing their homework assignments from my lessons.

  13. Speak

Hi! I read Speak, recently. I called it “research” as my current manuscript involves a rape, and I wanted to tell you how impressed I was. Your story ended up being nothing like mine at all, but I am so glad I read it. It was a wonderful book and encouraging to me for trying to write on such a sensitive subject.

    Thanks.

  16. News 10 Now Interview

Hi Laurie! I have been going and going, living my life, doing my thing and I finally turn on the TV to watch something I want to see…. and BAM! There is one of my favorite authors and her BH(who I haven’t talked to lately!) I was so excited to watch the interview, which was short and to the point. Good Job! It also reminded me that I haven’t peeked into your world in a while, so today, I finally took a minute to say HI! Enjoy the fall colors.. and you might want to finish the windows, as it is supposed to rain! 🙂 Safe trip this weekend. Lori 🙂
