September resolutions

Short entry today… gotta hop on the WIP.

If you are reeling from all the hurricane coverage and want a different perspective on a similar disaster, read Isaac’s Storm, by Eric Larson. Incredibly well-researched and written. I am a huge fan of Larson’s.

The start of the school year always feels like New Year’s to me. I think I am going to work on new resolutions today. I’ll post them later.

What are your resolutions for this school year?

added later…

I’ve been thinking about my resolutions all day. I have to say, I’m pretty darn happy where my life is right now. In fact, there is only one thing lacking, something that is fun, provides me with spiritual solace, makes me a nicer person, and is very important to my job. So here is my resolution:

1. I will read more books.

  1. I read Isaac’s Storm and I’ve been thinking about that book ever since they said Katrina was going to hit New Orleans. New Orleans is so like Galveston – under sea level, a lake at the other side – it’s tragic. Did you read his: The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America? I picked it up ages ago, but have not had a chance to read it yet. I hear it’s really good.

  4. My “School Years Resolution”: To keep all my grades in the 90’s, and get on the Highest Honor role at least once, and High Honor the rest of the time.

And to visit some collegeessss… High School is going by so fast… it’s not going to be long before I’m going off to college for my first year. It’s kind of scary. =P

  7. school resolutions

My school resolutions are to graduate this May with my teaching license but I first have to resolve to survive student teaching this spring. My other goals are to keep my GPA where it is or raise it more. I also want to start writing more this year, especially about my student teaching experience so one day I can look back and laugh at how scared I was. I am so excited about Sept 5th I can hardly wait to see the show. I can’t imagine what you are feeling. I know you have already seen the show but to know that millions may be watching your characters come to life must be humbling yet overwhelmingly satisfying. The girls are supposed to be at my house for the viewing party and I will send you pictures to see.

  10. To pass driver’s ed and, um, not crash my parents car. Although, my Dad’s smoking something if he thinks me getting a driver’s license means he can just walk into my room and say, “I don’t feel like driving today. Take me to the supermarket.”

  13. 1. This year’s watchwords: Flexible. Peaceful.
    2. This year’s lesson: Not every problem can be resolved by trying harder, working longer, adding more commitments, being more efficient. I will extend myself the same courtesies I grant my students.
    3. This year’s curriculum focus: The blend of and interplay between analytical and creative writing.
    4. This year’s reminder: Just because it’s not school doesn’t mean I don’t have to pay attention to it, where it = home, husband, family, friends, writing.

  16. He did a fantastic job with Devil in the White City, too. The story has some creepy elements in it – not the kind of book that I could read alone at night.

  19. Re: school resolutions

Good luck with the resolutions! And yes, I’m getting scared/excited/nervous/goofy about the movie premiere.

It would be highly cool to see photos of viewing parties!

  22. My resolution for the school year is to maintain my GPA, but not allow myself to stress soooo much about it. Every year I work myself into a full on panic about grades and I always end up okay!

I’ll check out Issac’s Storm (when I find a free moment)

  25. Oh my gosh…a fellow Mexico author!

    Hi Laurie!

Sorry to post an off-topic comment, but I caught the article about Speak in the Post-Standard today and had to try and get in touch with you. (A big, HUGE congrats on your movie, by the way!) I am also an author and resident of little ol’ Mexico, New York. My debut novel is coming out January 2007, and by day I am a freelancer for various magazines and web sites.

I’d love to hear from you sometime if you’re interested; you can reach me at author@swvaughn.com. But at any rate, it looks like you’re doing tremendously well and I wish you all the best.

    Regards,
    Sonya

  31. books and water

resolutions: get a job, read more books, eat better.

Sadly I just found out about Katrina two days ago. I was at a sci fi con in Canada with a friend. I’m still in shock. I know a guy down there who plays pro football. It’s fikkin crazy.
