Forgetting yesterday, begging for music

Next time the dreaded Monday the 16th rolls around, I’m staying in bed.

It started out with Meredith getting a flat tire in the parking lot of our apartment complex. A pain in the butt, but not a disaster because Mer is incredibly competent. I stood in awe as I watched my daughter change the tire by herself. My role was limited to offering cheerful and useless advice. No, wait – I had to write a note explaining why she was late for school. So I wasn’t totally useless.

I was in my car (no flats, thank you) by 8:00 am, headed for an elementary school in Royersford, PA, my last school visit of the season. This is normally a 45-minute drive for me, but because of traffic, I gave myself an hour to get there. I got on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and, along with tens of thousands of other commuters, sat. The 45-minute drive took two-and-a-half hours. I kid you not. Some moron with a piece of construction equipment pulled down wires across all lanes of both directions. A section of the turnpike (the section I needed to use) was closed in both directions for six hours. Thank goodness for cell phones and flexible teachers. They were able to rearrange the schedule so the day wasn’t a total disaster. Have I mentioned recently how much I hate the traffic around here? Grrrr…..

However, note this phrase in the previous paragraph my last school visit of the season.

*dances like a wild woman around the computer*

I get to write, write, write, write for the next four months!!!!!!!!

Which brings me to this request: recommend me a song, please. I need some new music. I am a classic rock fan, but I also like country, some alternative, and some mild head banging music. (Linkin Park OK, Korn, not). (I’ve been listening to Incubus, The Eagles, and Sarah McLachlan a lot this week, if that helps.)

What song that came out in the last 5 years should I be listening to as I work on my new book?

I don’t know about should (grin), but Ani DiFranco and Liz Phair have had some great stuff come out in the last few years.

  4. Hooray and congrats on your last school visit! Sorry about the horrendous traffic. I grew up in L.A. so I know your pain and suffering. I hate traffic!

Some current new fave songs: Hollaback Girl (Gwen Steffani), Hello Tomorrow (Karen O. and Squeaky Clean – from that Adidas commercial), Why Do You Love Me (Garbage), The Bucket (Kings of Leon), Here We Go Again (Ray Charles and Norah Jones), World on Fire (Sarah McLachlan), anything from Keane,…..I could go on and on….

Enjoy your four solid months of writing! WOO! Go Laurie Go!

  10. Yes, you need the whole Garden State soundtrack. And Liz Phair’s Red Light Fever on her last album is awesome. As are Take A Look and Good Love Never Dies.

And thanks, D, for reminding me I totally need to get Hollaback Girl at iTunes. Also, I am obsessed with that video even though I’ve only seen it once.

Also? The Warren Zevon tribute album, Enjoy Every Sandwich, is awesome and I’m not even a Zevon fan.

  19. Oh CRIPES but I can’t resist a question like that.

For your McLachlan side, in a way: Azure Ray (downloadable tracks here. They share a label with the aforementioned Bright Eyes, they are brilliant ladies writing beautiful songs, and one of them is married to the singer of The Faint, who I would also recommend if you are in a sort of aggressive new-wave dancing sort of mood. Key tracks: “Rise” and “The Devil’s Feet.” While you are at the Saddle Creek site, look for Cursive’s “Art is Hard.” I think Cursive’s singer, Tim Kasher, is single-handedly my favorite band at present.

What everyone should listen to: The Postal Service, particularly “Nothing Better” and “Brand New Colony.” On the much-lauded Garden State soundtrack, Iron & Wine does (do?) a heartbreaking cover of the Postal Service song “Such Great Heights” and it’s just lovely. I’d recommend them, too, for the quiet days.

When you want the headbangery stuff: And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. Beautifully aggro art-rock from Austin. “Mistakes & Regrets” was the hook for me, but the new album is brilliant.

I’m going to stop myself for the time being, but with one last suggestion: Neko Case, “I Wish I Was the Moon,” from Blacklisted. I love the whole album – she REALLY gets the alt.country thing right – but this song is a little shot straight to the heart.

(Also: The New Pornographers, “The Laws Have Changed”; Ryan Adams, “Sylvia Plath”; Whiskeytown, “Faithless Street”; At the Drive-In, “One Armed Scissor”; TV on the Radio, “Staring at the Sun”…)

Can I make you a mix? *grin*

  25. Eh, I figured if a peson can handle Linkin Park, they can handle Cursive and the Faint, but that might be my bias showing.

Thanks for the compliment, by the way! I’m from and currently live in Oregon, but my musical taste was shaped by nine years in NYC…

  28. Lauryn Hill is amazing. Her disc The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has some amazing amazing songs on it and her voice is incredible. It’s rap, hip-hop… all mixed in with beautiful acoustic guitar. OH! And you should really listen to the song “Bag Lady” by Erykah Badu as well (from her soothing disc Mama’s Gun)… I love these two women and the music they make. 🙂 I know it’s not head-banging… but something new to try!

Oh Alana Davis is very chill too.

There’s an awesome band called the Dresden Dolls that is ecclectic enough that you might like them. It’s a chick on piano, and a guy on drums. Amazing, haunting music!

  55. wow. Are we secret twins in the musical tastes department? I agree weith all your choices and I don’t think The Faint is at all too screamy. I saw them Sunday night (with Bright Eyes) and I am at least as old as Ms.Halse Anderson. They were fantabulous.

  58. um… for mellow stuff, The Postal Service hits the bullseye… but i might make you sleepy, lol

uh, let me think… Bjork is absolutley amazing, especially “All is Full of Love” and “Play Dead”. (she’s from Iceland, by the way. Iceland was on you to-do list, as i can recall)

for more rock (not too hard) The Rasmus (a band from Finland) is GREAT. Their older stuff is funky and random, but their two latest albums, ‘Into’ and ‘Dead Letters’ are pretty deep and mezmerizing… not too distracting while writing.

if anything, listen to “In the Shadows” or “Last Waltz” or “Chill” by The Rasmus. Great great stuff.

for mild ‘head banging’ stuff, I reccomend “The Taste of Ink” by The Used; well- their whole first album, really. They rock too. (Havent heard much from the new album, ‘Love and Death’, but their first CD is really cool.)

  61. Hoorah for new book writing, not so much for traffic.

Music-wise, I recommend any Five for Fighting song because they are awesome. But especially “Maybe I,” “Infidel,” and “Disneyland.” And Bowling for Soup since they are the perfect pick me up band. Just listening to them makes me smile, some of their songs are so silly, like “Trucker Hat.”

  64. Are we secret twins in the musical tastes department? I agree weith all your choices and I don’t think The Faint is at all too screamy. I saw them Sunday night (with Bright Eyes) and I am at least as old as Ms.Halse Anderson. They were fantabulous.

Maybe we are! That’d be fun. I went to the Bright Eyes/Faint show in Portland the other week and thought The Faint kinda blew poor tired Conor out of the water. So it goes, I guess. I have to admit, it makes me happy when people over the legal drinking age like these bands – what I, admittedly, think of as “good bands” – I’m barely clinging to the last shreds of “twentysomething” myself and sometimes I feel like people stop paying attention as they age, just based on the age of the audience at shows like this. Being proven wrong makes me happy. 🙂

  67. wow, i love it when people ask for music recommendations.

right now i think a great new artist is jem, a young woman from wales. her song “come on closer” was featured in the teaser commercials for the “desperate housewives” premiere. her new song “24” (which is based loosely on the tv show) is amazing with great vocals and great music behind her. i would definitely check out her album, “finally woken.”

enjoy and happy writing!! can’t wait for a new book!

  70. I have to admit, my kids are the ones who drug me *kicking and screaming* from ClassicRockLand. Once I agreed to listen to stuff beyond the radio wasteland, I was hooked. It was a little hard to admit at first. My grown up friends rolled their eyes at me when they caught me with Taking Back Sunday blaring in the car. But one good friend said, “We don’t stop watching new movies or reading new books as we get older. Why should we quit listening to new music?”

I agree with your assessment of The Faint vs Bright Eyes. I thought maybe something was wrong with Conor’s voice at the show I saw — but the instrumentals were incredible!

P.S. L HA, sorry to highjack your post ;^)

  76. Music Suggestions

Hey! I love your books! But anyway, more to the point, You said you needed some good music so here are my suggestions: If your in the mood for rock/punk listen to My Chemical Romance, There C.d. Three Cheers for Sweet revenge, I think, is FABULOUS!! and if your in the mood for some quieter singing, The soundtrack to the move Les Choristes is REALLY nice, and it sounds pretty, lol if that makes any sense. Happy Listening!

  79. Lori~ I’d like to recommend anything by the Christian rock band “Third Day” or a little harder rock by “Kutless”. This is great music with spiritual, kick butt lyrics.
