Day 9 – Battle Creek, pt. 1

Welcome to Cereal City. For real. At one time, this town had 50 cereal companies. Now it’s down to Post, Kellogg’s, and Ralston Purina. I wonder if going on a low-carb diet is illegal here?

I’ll be at schools in the area to talk about Fever 1793. I have a public presentation at the Willard Library here at 7pm.

Had about 70 people turn out last night at the Ann Arbor Library. That was a pleasant shock. (Thank you, Erin!) Before my presentation I was able to sneak in a couple hours of work on the Picture Book Manuscript That Won’t Go Away.

I decided that if it turns out that I didn’t pass high school and I have to go back and finish up my degree, I am moving to Ann Arbor so I can go to Community High School. I cannot say enough good things about that place. Incredible. If all schools were like that…

  1. Cereal… yum! Yeah, that was dorky. Anyway… I bought Prom last night, but I won’t be starting it for, like, at least another week. Darn all these books I’m reading!!!

  4. Ann Arbor presentation and Quisp cereal

Thanks for your presentation last night at the Ann Arbor Library. As a fan of your work I enjoyed your insights and humor, but as a mother, I was thrilled that my 13 year old daughter left the event energized and excited to read Speak and expecially Prom and to write. (She had been ignoring my pleas to read “Speak” because, well, I’m her mom and she’s 13)

I was also very excited to read on your web site that Quisp cereal is being produced again. It might not taste the way I remember it though…kind of like watching a Gilligan’s Island rerun.

  7. AA Library Visit

What a joy it was to attend a presentation that exceeded all (already high) expectations. You reached my 15 year old academic star and my 11 year old square peg in one discussion. Your insights and encouragement will help both of them either not take school TOO seriously or to take it just seriously enough. As a teacher, it was uplifting to hear (from a real live author) that we don’t have all the answers and it is all about bringing your own experience to the novel and creating meaning. Our library and its staff are always so enthusiastic and it reminded me once again how lucky we are:) What a wonderful opportunity! Thank you so much!
