Official SPEAK movie details

Here’s the deal.

They made a movie out of SPEAK. (They = Showtime Cable) It is a low-budget, independent film and I love it. I have loads of details and some photos on my website if you want to peek. I did not write the screenplay, but I think it is a very good adaptation. (It was cool to listen to lines of dialog in the movie that I wrote.) My daughter Stephanie and I visited the set for a few days and had a blast.

The movie (also called SPEAK) premiered at Sundance in 2004. It has since been shown at film festivals across the country and picked up a couple of awards along the way.

Here is the planned release schedule:

1. They’re supposed to air it on the Showtime cable channel this spring or summer.
2. After that, it’s supposed to go to DVD.

I wish that Showtime would move faster because I know a lot of you are anxious to see it. If there were any way I could get this film released tomorrow, I’d do it. In these situations, the author of the book has less influence than the guy who fetches the director’s coffee. The author’s job is to sit in a corner and shut up.

If you want to talk to other fans about the movie, visit the IMDB page (it has a message board). If you want to be an activist and try to get the darn think released sooner, try contacting Showtime. Unfortunately I have no clue how to do this. I’ve been to their website and they seem to have hidden themselves behind high walls of solid granite.

That’s all I know.

After I take Mer to band practice this morning, I have a thrilling trip to the post office planned. The rest of the day will be spent rewriting my historical non-fiction project and answering mail. Many thanks to Mrs. Benson’s class at Jamison Elementary for test-driving the manuscript yesterday. (They let me read it out loud to them then grill them about it.) Hi Alex!!

Many thanks to everybody in the LJ community for making me feel so welcome.

And I still think the Eagles are going to win.

  4. Boston

The Boston Massacre…Dear Crispus Attucks? I believe. Is there a Freedom Trail in Philly? Lexington? Paul Revere? “Shot heard round the world” which even made into an old Andy Griffith episode… Philly didn’t NAhhh-Nahhhh.
That aside, the Pats were so bad, for so long… as were the Sox, the Ghosts of Boston’s sports’past have gotten into the fray…

And thankfully you avoided Boston’s literary tradition from the Plymouth Plantation writings through Hawthorne and Walden and the rest…Nahhhh-Nahhhhh And what if you don’t like cheesesteak???

I teach in an Alternative High School and use SPEAK! Great stuff! Thanks!

  7. Fellow Philadelphian

    Hi there!

I’m a Philadelphian, too (well, I actually live in a suburb northwest of the city, but still…), and I want to applaud your Eagles spirit and join in!

    E-A-G-L-E-S — EAGLES!!!!

Now that I got that out of my system, I want to say thanks for posting information about the film version of “SPEAK.” I can’t wait to see it.

Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Perkins, Steve Zahn — sounds like an awesome cast. When I re-read the book recently, I was totally able to picture them in their roles. A great book worthy of a great adaptation.

By the way, is that you with Kristen Stewart in the lunch-line photo on your site? If so, I think that a lunch-lady cameo by the author is pretty cool!

  13. Parsonage house in Navarino

My mother met you a couple of years ago at an OCC speaking engagement, she had mentioned that her son and family now live in the Navarino United Methodist Church Parsonage, Well that is me, her favorite son, Don. It is true that I am her only son.

I have a great interest in learning more about your time spent here, and your life experiences. My wife and I have been blessed with three of the most beautiful girls you have ever seen, and our oldest, Alexandra (10),is a veracious reader.

We have lived in this house for 11 years now. It has been a real blessing to us, as we come into the house with no children and lots of spare time. During the 1999 Navarino bi-centennial, we acquired several old photographs of the house and a lot of first hand memories from families in the community, (The Annables, the Barries, the Hourigans, and the Searles).

We would love to hear from you. And any memories you feel comfortable sharing.
